Written in 1927, the Agatha Christie masterpiece is widely viewed as a landmark in detective literature — one of the best and most successful early mysteries (and reportedly one of Christie's favorites), though it was initially met with outrage, as it uses a plot device many readers thought unfair. Set in the small English town of King's Abbot, and told from the point of view of a village doctor, it opens with a suspicious death, followed by the murder of Ackroyd, a wealthy local who learns more about the death than it's wise to know, and whose own demise draws Hercule Poirot to investigate.
