Sonlight's Language Arts programs are so versatile. This year is the third time through Language Arts 1 for our family, and I have been able to tailor the program to meet the needs of each individual child. If one child needs more work with a certain concept, there are plenty of extra activities in the Instructor's Guide that I can choose from to reinforce that concept. But if they catch on quickly, I have the option of leaving out the extra activities. We also love Sonlight's choices for Readers. The books in Language Arts 1 are familiar favorites that the little ones often pull off the shelf for Mommy to read. Here, Katie (7) reads to Mom as Meghan (3) and Karson (2) eagerly join in for the story.
"I am so thankful that I can spend my time working with my children rather than planning lessons," says Amanda T of Port Matilda, PA. "If I had a curriculum that required a lot of extra time finding books or coordinating themed activities, I know I wouldn't be consistent and I would burn out." In addition to easy lesson planning, Amanda says she has seen a huge change in her children's relationship. In this photo, taken two years ago, Charlotte (now 10 and studying HBL F) leaves a sweet message for her sister Grace (now 6, HBL B). "We wanted to be able to place a priority on honoring God in our schooling. With Sonlight, I see our children spending time learning about the Lord and growing in love for one another." The T family has been Sonlighting for as long as they've homeschooled: three years.
Thank you, Sonlight, for providing a rich and gentle introduction to learning through literature. Sonlight allowed me to teach my older daughters while meeting my new baby's needs with tender flexibility. That same flexibility led us to read on blankets in the yard, curled up by the fire with cups of cocoa or even in our red wagon. Reading together has provided so many cozy moments for our growing family, stirred our imaginations, shaped our character and invited us into a culture of shared stories we'll never forget. Elise (7) and Sadie (5) are studying Core B, as Raina (3) and Hope (11 mos.) come along for the ride on the first-year Sonlight adventure.

The Instructor's Handbook contains an introduction to the philosophy behind Spelling You See and the five development stages of spelling. The Handbook also contains a "Getting Started" guide with an overview of the organization of the 36 lessons and information about the important skills and concepts that will be learned in this level. At the back of the Handbook there is more information about guided reading, chunking, copywork, "no rule day", dictation, answers to frequently asked questions, and a collection of helpful resources including passages for dictation.
