Spelling need not be difficult and frustrating. Rather than use tests and long spelling lists, Spelling You See takes a different approach to teach spelling. No spelling tests. No word lists. No flashcards. The developmental process of learning to spell is similar to what children go through when learning to walk. They need to develop the prerequisite skill of crawling before they can move on to walking and then running. In the same way, this program provides spelling books and other supplemental materials that guide your student through the process of learning how to spell.

Spelling need not be difficult and frustrating. Rather than use tests and long spelling lists, Spelling You See takes a different approach to teach spelling. Spelling You See takes the approach that students spell correctly when words are imprinted on the visual memory. No spelling tests. No word lists. No flashcards.

The design of the program allows students to develop spelling skills naturally, at their own pace, with the direction and encouragement of the instructor. This innovative approach was developed by Dr. Karen Holinga during more than ten years of research and experience tutoring children who struggle with spelling.

The developmental process of learning to spell is similar to what children go through when learning to walk. They need to develop the prerequisite skill of crawling before they can move on to walking and then running. In the same way, this program provides spelling books and other supplemental materials that guide your student through the process of learning how to spell.

For more information on each level (listed below) click on the "+" to the right. Once you have decided on the level that is right for your student you can use the Level dropdown at the top of this page to select the package.

Level A – Listen and Write

Includes everything you need to move your preliterate student to the phonetic stage of spelling with 36 lessons of Listen and Write: Instructor's Handbook with introduction to the philosophy of Spelling You See and a Getting Started guide, and the Student Pack with the Student Workbook, Listen and Write Sticker Pack and Guide to Handwriting.

Listen and Write:

  • Focuses on lowercase letter formation, consonants, and short vowels
  • Moves the student from three-letter words to four-letter and eventually to five-letter words
  • Includes the focus of each day’s worksheet at the top for easy reference
  • Contains 36 lessons divided into five parts (A through E). Each part is a day’s lesson and should take no more than ten minutes a day
  • Features letter boxes to help your child learn sound-to-letter correspondence, a skill needed for reading success
  • Teaches correct pencil grip and letter formation
  • Emphasizes the consistent, automatic formation of lowercase letters

While Listen and Write is not a handwriting course, efficient handwriting techniques allow students’ brains to handle these tasks effortlessly and concentrate on more important things, such as sound-to-letter correspondence. This level comes with a handwriting guide for your student.

Another fun feature of Listen and Write are the stickers that are included. Your student can find a sticker to match a word from the day’s lesson, or simply choose one as a reward for a job well done. The sticker page includes suggestions on how to use them with the lesson.

Level B – Jack & Jill

Includes everything you need to move your student from the phonetic stage to the skill development stage of spelling, with 36 lessons of Jack and Jill: Instructor's Handbook with introduction to the philosophy of Spelling You See and a Getting Started guide, and the Student Pack, which includes two Student Workbooks, a Guide to Handwriting, and a pack of erasable colored pencils.

Students at this stage are developing phonemic awareness—the ability to distinguish the individual sounds that make up spoken words in English. They then relate these sounds to print by learning that letters represent sounds, that letters make up words, and that each word looks different. Children arrive at the end of the Phonetic Stage once they have learned the basic rules of phonics and can actively apply them to both reading and spelling.

Jack & Jill:

  • Uses a nursery rhyme theme to introduce words in an engaging yet meaningful format
  • Nursery rhymes introduce words and ideas that students might not otherwise hear and help students distinguish sounds that are similar, but not exactly the same. Easy to say and easy to learn, nursery rhymes add an indispensable auditory component during the Phonetic and Skill Development Stages of spelling
  • Includes 36 lessons, divided into two books for ease of use. Each of the lessons is divided into five parts, A through E. One daily lesson consists of two facing pages
  • Includes erasable colored pencils with each Student Pack
