This CompuScholar course teaches students how to code in the Java language. It can be used as an introductory computer science course or as the primary resource to prepare for the AP Computer Science A exam. Students don't need any prior programming experience. All required Java skills are taught from the ground up.
The Java Programming course material is delivered online to both students and teachers. Students can complete all required activities through a web browser on any Windows, Mac, Chromebook or tablet device. Each purchase comes with a student and teacher account. The course is self-study and self-paced, and students can begin at any time.
The Student Experience
Each required chapter contains multiple lessons with:
- An instructional video
- Written lesson text with interactive coding opportunities
- An automatically graded quiz
At the end of each required chapter, you will also find:
- An automatically graded, hands-on programming project
- An automatically graded test
Optional chapters near the end of the course provide flexible learning opportunities on a variety of coding subjects. Some optional projects require external development environments or rely on parent (teacher) grading via rubrics.
A separate license must be purchased for each student.
The Teacher Experience
The CompuScholar online Learning Management System (LMS) simplifies teacher tasks like grading and progress tracking. Just like the student, teachers will access all Java programming course material online. A teacher's login includes all student material, plus:
- A Teacher Guide for each lesson
- A Solution Guide and fully coded solution projects for each activity
- Quiz and test answer keys
- Complete electronic gradebook
- Student management features
- Hours of professional development for each course
All required, hands-on projects are automatically graded by the CompuScholar online system! Parental expertise is not required. Parents retain full control over student grades. Parents may choose to grade some optional projects near the end of the course using provided rubrics.
Studying for the AP Computer Science A Exam
This two-semester, online course may be used to prepare students for the AP Computer Science A exam! CompuScholar’s Java Programming curriculum is listed as an example resource by the College Board and comes with a pre-approved College Board syllabus for parents who want to complete the Course Audit process as an AP teacher.
