Science K (Ages 5-7 | Grades K-2)
Ecosystems, Meteorology, Physics, & Engineering Design
Hands-On Science That Inspires Curiosity
Why does the wind blow? Why are honeycombs made of perfect hexagons? How can tiny insects accomplish incredible things?
Science K invites children to explore questions like these through engaging living books, meaningful conversations, and hands-on experiments that bring science to life. Instead of simply memorizing facts, students discover how God's creation works by observing, asking questions, making predictions, and exploring ideas for themselves.
Science K is our recommended science program for kindergarten students, but is designed for students ages 5–7 (grades K-2), so families teaching multiple students can successfully use it with first and second grade students as well.
Science K is a complete 36-week science curriculum that provides a full year of engaging homeschool science through living books, hands-on experiments, and easy-to-follow daily lessons.
Easy to Teach
Every Science K package includes Sonlight's renowned Instructor's Guide, making it easy to explore science together throughout a complete 36-week school year. Whether you're new to homeschooling or an experienced homeschooler, the guide provides daily lesson plans, discussion questions, teaching notes, and activities that help you confidently guide your child's learning.
Science K is available in both 4-day and 5-day packages to fit your family's homeschool routine. The 5-day package includes one additional book.
The Instructor's Guide also includes teaching notes and one set of Activity Sheets filled with age-appropriate questions, illustrations, charts, and simple activities that reinforce what students are learning.

A Different Way to Learn Science
At Sonlight, we believe children learn science best by experiencing it.
Every lesson follows a simple rhythm:
Read. Discuss. Discover.
Students first explore a topic through engaging living books that introduce scientific ideas in memorable ways. Guided discussion questions help them think more deeply about what they've read. Then, hands-on experiments allow them to investigate those ideas through real-world exploration.
Rather than separating reading from doing, Science K connects them together—helping children understand not just what happens, but why.
Science Through Living Books
Children rarely fall in love with science by reading a textbook full of isolated facts. They become fascinated when they see science at work in the real world.
Students explore weather, habitats, insects, reptiles, plants, forces, matter, engineering, and environmental stewardship through engaging nonfiction filled with beautiful illustrations, fascinating photography, and memorable examples.
Along the way they'll discover books like Why Do Elephants Need the Sun?, Wangari's Trees of Peace, Forces Make Things Move, and The Big Book of Why—books that encourage children to keep asking questions long after the lesson is over.
Hands-On Discovery Every Week
Reading about science is only the beginning.
Each week, students complete an experiment that connects directly to what they've been learning. Whether investigating why bees build hexagonal honeycombs, exploring weather, or discovering how forces affect movement, every activity encourages children to observe carefully, test ideas, and draw their own conclusions.
The experiments are intentionally designed to be simple, engaging, and accessible for homeschool families while helping students build confidence through discovery instead of memorization.
Experiment Videos Included
Science K also includes digital access to the Discover & Do: Kindergarten Science Experiment Videos, which feature every experiment performed throughout the year.
These entertaining videos reinforce key concepts, model each investigation, and add humor and visual demonstrations that make learning even more memorable. Watching the experiments alongside their own hands-on investigations creates an engaging learning experience that helps ideas stick.

With Sonlight Science K, your children learn by actually doing the science!
Science Supplies Included
Hands-on science is more enjoyable when you're ready to begin.
That's why the Discover & Do: Science Supplies Kit is included with Science K. While many experiments use common household items, the kit provides many of the specialized materials you'll need throughout the year, helping reduce preparation time and making it easy to jump right into each activity.
Less time searching for supplies means more time exploring, experimenting, and learning together.
A Joyful Foundation for Lifelong Learning
Science K is about more than learning scientific facts.
It's about nurturing curiosity, encouraging thoughtful questions, developing problem-solving skills, and helping children recognize the incredible order and creativity found throughout God's creation.
Through engaging books, meaningful conversations, and hands-on discovery, students build both the confidence and the curiosity that will serve them throughout their education—and beyond.
