The CompuScholar Game Programming Visual Basic Online Course provides 6th - 12th grade students with an easy introduction to programming and video game design topics using Visual Basic. This course pairs together our popular CompuScholar: Windows Programming and CompuScholar: Game Programming semesters in one integrated, year-long bundle.
These courses require a Windows computer to complete the hands-on programming activities.
The first semester teaches students to write graphical programs using the Visual Basic programming language. Topics include include working with numeric and text data, logical operators and decision-making, math operations, responding to user input, finding and fixing program errors, arrays, and more.
The second semester builds on the student's Visual Basic skills to write video games. Students will learn how to draw shapes, handle keyboard clicks and mouse movements, create and use sprites, display and animate images, detect collisions, play music, create artificial intelligence and implement simple game physics.
Students don't need any prior programming experience. We build all Visual Basic skills from the ground up. Students will use the free Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2013 development environment.
All game programming Visual Basic material is delivered online to both students and teachers. There are no textbooks to wear out or CDs to scratch. Simply purchase online logins for your students and teachers to get started.
Each chapter contains multiple lessons with:
At the end of each chapter you will also find:
While all course content is delivered online, each Visual Basic course contains hands-on activities to be completed on the student's personal computer. The student will actually write, build, and demonstrate their own programs using modern Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). All 3rd party software is free to download, install, and use!
Our online Learning Management System (LMS) simplifies teacher's tasks like grading and progress tracking. Just like the student, teachers will receive all Visual Basic programming course material online. A teacher's login includes all student material, plus:
