Vocabulary
Sonlight Curriculum has incorporated "natural language learning"-oriented vocabulary development exercises in its Read-Aloud Study Guides which are part of the Core Instructor's Guides.
However, if you lack the time to work with your children on the Read-Aloud exercises, or if you prefer the feeling of security that a workbook-oriented program can provide, or if you sense your children require additional help in this area, we offer and schedule the following optional texts.
Notice: We now carry the 2nd edition of the Wordly Wise series, which have different book numbers. Be sure to purchase both the student workbook and teacher's key in the 2nd edition. Please review this 2nd Edition Wordly Wise Chart.
Notice: Wordly Wise 3000 Book K (KL101) and Wordly Wise 3000 Book 1 (1L101) have been removed from the curriculum. These Wordly Wise workbooks are listed in the 2008 catalog as part of a great optional series for kids who love words and want to excel in their reading and vocabulary comprehension. However, based on customer concerns and feedback, we discovered this edition of Wordly Wise required an additional purchase of a rather expensive Teacher's Keyone not available through Sonlight and more suited to a classroom environment. It is our desire to help your curriculum remain as flexible and affordable as possible; and so, after reevaluating the issue, we have decided to remove this workbook from our product line. We encourage you to continue using the engaging activities and read-alouds in our literature-rich program, as they will help your children naturally improve their vocabulary and develop a love for great stories.
Wordly Wise
Wordly Wise workbooks B and C include vocabulary building exercises for about 100 words each.
Exercises ensure students are able to comprehend what they read when they run across the words in context, give students confidence that they can use the words in writing, and teach students the words' various meanings.
A special "Wordly Wise" section at the end of each lesson discusses words with interesting histories, and distinguishes between words that people commonly mistake for one another.
Wordly Wise 3000 workbooks 1 through 9 each introduce 300 words. While their purpose is similar to the "standard" Wordly Wise series, their exercises are different. They incorporate interesting literary pieces and fascinating historical tales. Each lesson includes a series of five exercises. Both sets of Wordly Wise workbooks are consumable.
Analogies
In Level 100 and beyond, Sonlight continues its emphasis on vocabulary development through the Analogies series, and the Vocabulary from Classical Roots books.
The Analogies series, we feel, provides students with excellent practice in choosing their words carefully. Vocabulary from Classical Roots strengthens the base by reiterating relations between English words and their Greek or Latin roots, and adding new words to the collection.
Please Note: Sample pages of all workbooks that we carry can be found on-line at www.sonlight.com/samples.html.
