I have found this book to be very disappointing. The pictures are condensed and little and I have to help my daughter follow along as me move on the page. Some of the illustrations have been left out. We also already owned several of the books included in this book, which made it feel unnecessary. Even though we live overseas, I would rather have had individual books. My preschooler cannot easily haul this one off the shelf to read, and there's no "magic" in a story that's had all of it's pictures minimized and laid out on one or two pages! The selection of the stories is good--that's not the problem. The presentation is the problem.

This is truly a children's treasury. It is packed full of wonderful classics and my children adore this book. I thought some of the stories lost something with the condensed illustrations and shortened stories. We checked out some of the stories from the library and if my children were really fond of a story, like "Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom" and "Freight Train" among others, then we purchased a copy of the book with large illustrations and complete text. Overall I have to give this book a 5 rating because it is so complete and exposes children to so many wonderful stories. It is fun to watch the children develop a preference for artistic style, voice, and composition even at such a young age. It is also a great book to take on trips, because in one book you have so many of their favorites.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! Oh, yes, so do my kids! This is probably the favorite out of all of the books. I have memorized most of "Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom". My three year old wanted it read to her every
day! We bring this book everywhere! It is great to read a story out of while waiting for an appointment, or for the kids to look at in the car while we drive someplace! If we ever wear it out, I WILL be replacing it!

We love this book. Even though some illustrations may have been edited, they never seemed to be lacking enough to lose the kids attention. An excellent (and economical!) way to build up a children's library. The stories are a good mix of authors and the stories encompass the entire century, not just the last quarter of it. So, some do have a bit more archaic feel, which personally I see as a plus as it helps grow vocabulary.

If you are going to buy ONE book, get this book! We read this on an almost daily basis and we've owned it for 3 years. It is the first choice both my 4 and 6 year olds make at bedtime. I agree that it's sad that the pictures are so small and some are missing but I completely understand why that has to happen. I have actually gone out and purchased a couple of the stories in full form because we loved them so much. I wish I could purchase every book that is included but that would be too expensive and that is why I LOVE this book and that all these amazing stories are together for such a low price!

It has already been mentioned, but I agree that it is a shame some of the great illustrations had to be left out and some of the stories are shortened. Also, some of the stories are excellent, but I'm really not sure how several of the others made it into this treasury. This is just not one of our favorites.

My children adore this book. Two years later we still read from it daily. My 2 year old is now pulling it off the shelf, and her brother still comes to listen too. We have purchased many of the stories in individual books for the grandchildren.

I agree with Cathy H. I didn't like how some illustrations were editted out or made smaler than the originals, though I understand that this has to happen... I can only say, if my child enjoys any story more than others, to seek out an original copy of the relevant picture book for the personal library.

Great collection of stories. I highly recommend that everyone read these stories to their children. However, I strongly dislike the way these stories are presented in this book. In order to fit them all in, they crammed multiple pages of the original text onto one page of this book. It makes the illustrations small and hard to see. You lose a lot of the original beauty this way.

This is a great collection of stories and we have all enjoyed reading from this book.
