As a first year homeschooling mom, I found this book very helpful. My kids, at the time, were grades K and 2nd. I first checked the book out at the library and this year purchased it for my own library as a resource for my 2nd year in homeschooling. The book is a quick read and gives you more confidence as a teacher. Also, the book gives you an specifics as to where kids should be in math academically at different grades. When I struggled with language arts with my 2nd grader, the copy and dictation methods were good too. I plan to read it again this summer before starting my second year to just have a better grasp of all that is presented in the book. I look forward to it as I start 1st and 3rd grades this year.

I was homeschooling based on this book before I "found" Sonlight, so the fact that Sonlight listed this as a recommended resource helped me to make the decision to become a Sonlighter. I strongly feel that this book is appropriate for preschool through about 2nd grade, rather than the K-3 level that Sonlight lists. Also, reading this book (it's not long) will go a long way toward helping parents understand Sonlight's philosophies and reasons for why they offer what they offer.

I cannot recommend Ruth Beechick's methods highly enough. Having used this approach and Sonlight's curriculum based upon it for seven years, I see the fruit. It has taught my three different learners to think, learn and love school. I especially appreciate her understanding of childhood development, enabling us to capitalize on what their brains ARE capable of absorbing while not wasting time on busy work and activities that don't produce a lasting result.

While I don't doubt Ruth Beechick's methods work wonders for many children, her methods are only one method of homeschooling. I did gain a few helpful tips from this book, but this style of homeschooling is not the best fit for my family & I (my children can't get enough of workbooks.) This book is an "indispensible" source for those using a supposed "natural" method of learning. For families like mine which fit better with a step-by-step learning approach, this book didn't have much to offer. I read though this book once and never picked it up again--I was tempted to only give this book 3 stars...but I can imagine that if I were a different personality type, I'd want to give this book 5 stars, so I split the difference and gave it four.
