Fascinating historical fiction that closely follows the truth about a brave 15-year-old Japanese fisherman, Manjiro Nakahama, who is shipwrecked far off the coast of Japan, is brought to the United States, and, upon returning home, paves the way for Commodore Perry's successful "opening of Japan" to the United States in 1853.

3 out of 5 stars by SHANNON S on 2009-12-09
Interesting story of a little known Japanese man who played a minor but essential role in the opening of Japan to the west, which began with his being stranded on a Japanese island for 6 months and rescued by an American whaling ship.
