Fiction, Fairy Tales, and Fun for Little Learners

Over 100 of the best-ever stories younger children will love again and again! (plus music, games, art, Parent's Companion, and more)

Satisfy (and nurture) your toddler's inquisitive hunger...

Best of all: Not a single workbook or lesson plan in sight.

Together, you’ll all enjoy these age-friendly books filled with over 100 fables and true stories. There's also a book of poetry, a science book, and an excellent illustrated Bible storybook for children. Sonlight Level P3/4 even includes over 78 nursery rhymes and sing-alongs on CD, games that build memory and pattern recognition (the only math instruction that's truly needed for ages 3-4 years), and more!

Sarita Holzmann's daughter Amy considered hundreds of books to choose the titles in this collection...

"Many of them are books my parents loved when they were children," she said. "I still remember my dad's voice growing happy as he prepared to read Make Way for Ducklings: 'This was my favorite book!' My mother vividly remembers the first time she heard the story of Caps for Sale, when Captain Kangaroo read it on his television program when she was about five.

"Others are books that I loved as a child. Virginia Lee Burton's classics Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and The Little House stood out among the hundreds of picture books we read. And Harold and the Purple Crayon, so sparse in its illustrations and so funny in its text, absolutely delighted me.'

"Then there are the books that today I love as a mother. No matter how many times I read Horton Hatches the Egg, I still grow teary when I read the proper, marvelous end for Horton...

And it should be, it should be, it SHOULD be like that!
Because Horton was faithful! He sat and he sat!
He meant what he said
And he said what he meant...
...And they sent him home
Happy,
One hundred per cent!

from Horton Hatches the Egg, by Dr. Seuss [pseud.], 1904

"Even as an adult, I still found great pleasure when I finally owned my own copy of Go, Dog, Go, and realized that the big dog party at the end still had the same level of wonder and joy as it had when I was young.

"Still others are books that my sons love. For the last several years, almost no rest time has passed without one of them selecting Richard Scarry's What Do People Do All Day? as one of their rest time companions. The first time we read the simple book Baby Says, my oldest laughed and laughed—he could relate to the family dynamics in that story!"

Parent's Companion makes "teaching" your toddler as easy and rich as you want it to be:

At this early beginning, please feel free to "just read" your children's favorite stories with them. We don't want you to feel you must do something. So the supplemental resource we've created for you to use with Sonlight's new Level P3/4 is designed—on purpose—to be very practically simple, yet very easy and fun to draw from for those "teachable" moments when you know your little one's eyes, ears, and mind are wide open.

You can enjoy Level P3/4 by just cuddling on the couch and reading with your children. But if you're like most Sonlighters, we know you want them to continually delight in their "learning adventure" and thirst for more.

So your special Parent's Companion helps you:

  • Fuel their imagination (and memory) with easy, creative activities for every story included.
  • Complement your own ideas with encouragement, inspiration, and links to more optional resources.
  • Enjoy simple checklists to track your progress (no strict schedule to follow).

Your Parent's Companion doesn’t have a "schedule" like you'll find in the Sonlight Instructor's Guides for later levels. We simply list the stories by trimester and suggest that you check them off as you read them. If your child wants to read Give a Mouse a Cookie fifteen times in a row—let her do it. And if she wants to skip a book or two "ahead" in the list: go ahead and do that. The goal here is: have fun together!

It goes way beyond the checklist to help you know you've enjoyed each story at least once. Your Parent's Companion offers pages of inspiration you can use to create bonding opportunities—build the relationship between you and your preschooler—and foster in them a lifelong thrill in the discovery process. For example:

Take in everything from quotes and tips to make homeschooling easier and more rewarding to practical notes on organizing and cleaning. There's plenty of "bite-sized nuggets" of help you can use to keep your home running more smoothly all year long—even outside of school time.

No "early academics" here: Just give your little ones quality time with the whole family, without stealing their natural love for discovery...

Mom (or Dad) can enjoy reading together with the young ones while big brother or sister tackles some independent work. Or let them grow and learn on their own too, while you enjoy more focused (some times even distraction-free) teaching time.

Even encourage your older ones to use these easy stories, activities, games and sing-alongs to bond with "little sister" (or brother). And while they do... you can take a refreshing break in the middle of your busy day!

Why build your own library for toddlers? It may seem easier and cheaper to get books from the public library instead, but you have to give them up when you take them back. Children love to read their favorites over and over again (and the repetition boosts their vocabulary and skills for later reading). They take intense pleasure in having books that become "special friends." And that's to say nothing of the investment value of passing these books on from generation to generation!

Enjoy your little ones and invite them to share your love of learning...

The way you wish you’d been taught. Guaranteed.

5 out of 5 stars by GRANT B on 2009-09-06
We have greatly enjoyed reading through this Core. It really has given my 4 year old daughter a love for learning. Every day, she brings me her stack of books so we can "do school" just like her older siblings. As others have mentioned, the older children also gather around for these stories. A real winner for the whole family. When I am not able to read with her, she keeps herself busy with the Mighty Minds pattern blocks, and the Teddy Mix And Match. This is a great core, and well worth the money. Highly recommended. ~MrsPastorGrant~

I bought this Core for my older ones (4 and 6 at the time) to enjoy, with the intention of using it with my 3 year old a bit later. We ALL have enjoyed this core, with the exception of a few stories, but the vast majority have been great. I would not have bought quite a few of them had they not been in this Core, and I am so glad I trusted Sonlight and bought this Core.

We LOVE this Core! I decided to use it with our 2 youngest kids (ages 3 and 4) that we recently adopted from Ethiopia. It has been SUCH a joy to sit and read with them, to hear them giggle, and to relate to the stories. I think that it has really aided in our bonding process, as well as their learning of English. Some of my best memories over the last months, are with them on my lap reading from these stories. Thank you, SL, for this GREAT curriculum! (Our oldest 2, who are doing Core K, can't keep away from the p3/4 stories, either! We all love it! Thank you!)

Excellent books! Loved all except the Noah's Ark - too sad to see the leftover animals standing in the flooding water looking at the others in the boat. This really upset me, but I am a total animal lover.

I bought this for my 2 1/2daughter. She loves it, I love it! She loves to read, this adds books I would not think buy. It is worth the money even at a early age.

I bought this for my 4 y/o son --- I am thrilled to say the selection of books are much more versatile than I had anticipated. My 19 month old and 7 y/o beg me to read stories from these books on a daily basis! Also, the parents companion is really great! It has some lovely poetry and encouraging words for parents, it was definitely worth it's weight ...
