An historically accurate portrait of family life in the polders and among the windmills in Holland during the last years of Nazi occupation during WWII . . . and the months after, as families began to come back together.

This book has it all: strong moral lessons, a fascinating picture of how the events of history affected normal people, and a great story. One of our favorite Sonlight books after years of doing Sonlight.

Lovely book of perseverance, faith, sacrifice, and courage. Good books bring good morals to the heart and if could attain to be as courageous a character as Mother Verhagen I would have done well. Hilda Van Stockum successfully captures the reader as though you were there. A MUST READ- READ ALOUD!!

Our kids, too, are begging for more chapters! We're staying up REALLY late at night!! I think this might be my favorite in this CORE. I would have never even heard of this book were it not for our beloved Sonlight! I'm finding more Hilda van Stockum books, too. She's such a gifted writer, especially for reading aloud. It just FLOWS. I love it!!!

One of my favorite books we read this year was The Winged Watchman by Hilda Van Stockum. It is the story of the Verhagen family living in Holland during World War II. One part that I thought was really funny was when four year old Trixie asked Hildenbrand to marry her because she had lost her husband. We all laughed when we heard that. This story talks about a family who is kind, funny and very brave in the face of German soldiers. They help others and care for each other too. This book made me feel happy because the war was over and the Verhagen's survived. I would have liked to be part of this family because they had great adventures and outsmarted the Germans and they had a purring cat and a very loyal dog. Hudson Age 7

What a wonderful book. We are just about to finish it and I am now scrambling to find other Hilda van Stockum books. My local library only has 1 and online used copies are pricey, so you know she is a well-liked author. If you started Sonlight after Core 4, you must go back and read this.

Very well written to introduce children to facts about wartime life in Europe. Not overly full of morbid war facts - but at the same time gives an idea of the suffering - and braveness of many people in that time.

In a core FULL of amazing books, this is a stand out. Without being heavy handed, it really gives a good picture of life in a war zone. Both my son and I loved it.

One of our whole family's absolute favorites! The story, the historical setting, the characters -- everything was excellent. The things this book taught my children about God, the presence of evil in the world, and the courage of those willing to stand up to that evil are priceless. The way these topics were handled was excellent, too; Without adopting a preachy tone, Von Stockum presents clearly and beautifully issues which leave many Christians scrambling for a satisfying answer. All of this in an exciting story which left my kids begging for another chapter each night!
