Naya Nuki, by Kenneth Thomasma, is my favorite book of the school year so far! This book is my favorite, because it's about a girl who had enough courage to stand up to her greatest fear - being taken captive! Naya Nuki and her best friend Sacajawea were forced to march many miles to an enemy camp where they became slaves. But after weeks of carefully gathering supplies, Naya Nuki escaped! After many, many months Naya Nuki arrived at her band's camp. My favorite part of the book was when Naya Nuki escapes the enemy camp. This book made me feel excited, scared, and amazed all at the same time. I think you will want to read this book, because it's a great example of courage, survival skills, and best of all, true hope! I love Sonlight. My favorite book in the Sonlight Curriculum is Naya Nuki, by Kenneth Thomasma and illustrated by Eunice Hundley.
Naya Nuki has a lot of courage. She was taken from her people as a slave. She and a few other slaves had to walk 1000 miles [on foot] to a new place. But pretty soon Naya Nuki ran away!
We did not know what her name was before she ran away. When she got back home the elders of her people named her Naya Nuki, which means ‘the Girl Who Ran’.
I admire Naya Nuki because she knew if she was caught, it would cost her life. My favorite part of the story was when she finds her people! I think it was worth it to run away, even though it was dangerous!!!!!!! I think everyone should read Naya Nuki, it is so exiting. (Student Review by Emma G., age 9, Senegal)

My favorite book this year in school is called Naya Nuki. It was written by Kenneth Thomasa and illustrated by Eunice Hundley. It was published by Grandview Publishing Company in 1983.
In the book an Indian girl named Naya Nuki is made a slave by enemy Indians in Montana. Naya Nuki tries to escape. She hides food, weapons, tools, clothes, and shoes. Then, on a rainy night, she runs away and begins the journey home.
The book is my favorite because Naya Nuki is brave and doesn't give up. She has a lot of adventures. My favorite part of the book is when Naya Nuki gets back to her home. The book is so exciting that I couldn't wait to know what happened next. You'll want to read it because you can learn a lot about how Indians lived, and the book is very suspenseful. This is a great book for third grade!

"Naya Nuki" is written by Kenneth Thomasma and illustrated by Eunice Hundley. It was first published in 1983 and it's 20th publishing was in August 2008.
Naya Nuki is a young Shoshoni girl that gets captured by enemy warriors on her way to the winter buffalo hunt. She and her friend, Sacajewea, were forced to march 1,000 miles from Montana to North Dakota where she and Sacajewea became slaves. The only thing Naya Nuki could think about was escape.
"Naya Nuki" is an action adventure novel with plenty of suspense. The book is so vivid you feel like you are there with Naya Nuki. My favorite part of the book is when Naya Nuki gets stopped by enemy warriors on her way home to the mountains.
I say that if you like adventure, you will love this book! (Student Review by Nicole, Age 9)

This is one of my favorite books of the year, telling of an American Indian girl that was caught at an early age by old tribal enemies, was made a slave, and then escaped and finally returned to her tribe and family.
Naya Nuki and her tribe journey to the great plains where wild buffalo live. One early morning, a ambush from an enemy tribe came and took many captives, Naya Nuki being one of them. She was taken to a distant tribe, and sold to an old widow lady. There she saved and dried food, stole a buffalo hide, and found a knife in a stream bed. She ran away, hiding by day and running by night. After being chased by a bear, being snowed in, and getting deathly sick, she returned home to her mother.
The reason why I like this book is because it portrays the life of a Indian, what they ate, what they wore, where and how they found their food, and what roles the women and men played in the tribe. It tells how the main character faced and solved problems, how she, when there was no food left, dug roots! How, when she was snowed in, climbed a tree to see where she was! My favorite part, however, was when she found and saved everything she needed to make the trip. (Student Review)--Esther R.

"Naya Nuki, Shoshoni Girl Who Ran" by Kenneth Thomasma is an amazing book about an 11 year old Indian girl named Naya Nuki who was captured by an enemy tribe. She finally escapes and runs 1000 miles back to her home. Her trip is full of dangers and hardships, and she shows great courage. I like this book because it is filled with adventure and excitement. For example, she almost gets killed by a grizzly bear, and she almost falls off a cliff in the middle of a blizzard. I learned that even at 11 years old, you can survive for more than a month in the wild. --Sarah Welton-Lair-- (Student Review)

My favorite book for this core is "Naya Nuki" written by Ken Thomasma, because it is a great example of survival. My favorite part of the book is when a bear attacked Naya Nuki, and she climbed a tree to escape. She ended up staying in that tree for the whole night until the bear left. This book made me feel more interested in traps, and I have already built a couple. I think you might want to read this book because it was very exciting.
