This wonderful story by Kenneth Thomasma is about a Blackfeet Indian boy. The boy finds a clever raven who he keeps as a pet, and the raven and the boy save their tribe numerous times. Because of his fabulous bird, the boy is named Om-Kas-Toe, meaning Raven. One day Elkdogs, (horses) are spotted by Om and a Blackfeet brave. The elkdogs are owned by the enemy, and make fighting and hunting much easier. They can outrun the fastest brave, and are swift, strong and bold. One day Om and his twin sister find a runaway elkdog grazing in a meadow. This elkdog will be a great help to their tribe in many ways. But will they be able to capture it? I liked this book because of its details and writing style. The characters are easy to imagine and I learned a lot about the Blackfeet Indians while reading this book.

Om-kas-toe is an extraordinary book with a lot of amazing adventures in a Blackfoot Indian tribe. It is about a boy and his twin sister going on adventures and finding a crow and training it to do tricks. But you have to read it to find out what adventures they have.
I like this book a lot because it tells a great deal about what is going on in the story and what every body is doing. I liked how the tribe of the Blackfeet Indians were described very brave and the way they lived was describe well too.
Everyone should read this book because it make you feel like you are in the story, you are going on every fun adventure they go on, and you are in the home-like-tribe too; so just read it.

My favorite book I've read in Core 3 so far is Om-Kas-Toe. The book was written by Kenneth Thomasma. It's about a Blackfeet boy who has a twin sister and together they capture a horse. Their tribe calls it an elkdog. Om Kas-Toe has many exciting adventures. This is my favorite book; because the book is about Native Americans and horses, and I love them both. One of my favorite parts was when Om-Kas-Toe was being chased by the enemy. This book made me feel excited when I read it. I think you'll want to read this book, because it's a real story that's about an adventurous boy. (Moriah - age 8)

My favorite book this year was Om-Kas-Toe. Kenneth Thomasma wrote the book and published it in 1986. It is about a Blackfeet boy whose name is Om-Kas-Toe. He has a raven named Wisebird and a twin sister. He and his sister were the first to capture an elkdog, which is a horse, for their tribe.
I liked this book because it was a very good story. I felt happy for Om-Kas-Toe because of all his adventures, and the amazing things he did for his people. My favorite part was when he and his sister found the elkdog. It was very interesting and exciting because you never knew what was going to happen next. I think everyone would enjoy reading this book. Megan, Age 9

Om- kas-toe
Om-kas-toe was my favorite book this year. I liked this book because there was lots of action and adventure. There was history such as tribe names. The book was good at giving you the feeling of what life was like back then. My favorite part of the book was when Om-kas-toe and his sister caught the first horse, that they called elk dog. This book made me feel exited and very happy. If you are looking for a book with Indians and action, Om-kas-toe is the book for you.

My 8.5 year old son LOVED this book! So much so that what was supposed to be read over a 3-week period, he sat and read in three days (which is unusual for him!)! He then spent the next few weeks pretending to be an Indian! He said it was his favorite book of the Core.

I don't know why we have to be different, but our family really didn't enjoy this book. The kids finally begged me to "just finish the book, so we don't have to hear it anymore." My kids are on the upper end of the age spectrum for Core 3+4, so maybe that had something to do with it? I thought the book was full of interesting information, but it did seem to read slow.
