I absolutely LOVED this book. It was a little slow in starting, but it picked right up, and Esteban's character was such a wonderful one. I loved learning about all of the different Indian cultures, and the ways they lived and survived. It was also enlightening about how some slaves were captured and forced to leave their life and family and all they knew to become slaves. In Esteban's case, he was a mighty man with much status until his capture. I found it hard to put the book down each day, and the surprising ending left us all heartbroken. I heartily recommend this book, and am so glad Sonlight has it in the curriculum. GREAT story.

This has been a tough book to stick with. This is our 6th year with Sonlight and I think this is my least favorite book so far. If you have to leave one out I would probably skip this one.

This book was very hard to read aloud. I was disappointed in the writing in general, but the dialogue was especially hard to follow because I couldn't keep track of who was speaking. I kept having to add my own words to the dialogue so that my kiddos could understand who was saying what. (Maybe if I was better at using different voices for different characters, it would have been easier.) The subject matter was very interesting & we stuck with it and finished the book and I'm glad we did. But, as this is our first year with Sonlight, it was not a good introduction to Sonlight read-alouds. Thumbs down.

We couldn't put this book down. The kids were on the edge of their seats, and kept begging me to read just one more chapter (Yippee! Thanks Sonlight!) They still burst into fits of laughter when they re-enact Esteban as the bull.

My daughter didn't care for this book, but my son really liked it. I liked it better the second time around as well. I love the character of Esteban, and there are still people being sold by their families today. I think it gives a great deal to think about.

I figured that this book is based on the actual writings of Cabeza de Vaca! So many things about that time period that I didn't know. Very interesting!

Written by 10yo girl: "This was my favorite book because I thought that their journey to Mexico is exciting and funny too. Although this scene is a bit frightening, my favorite part is when Esteban saves himself, Chakoh, and the Spaniards from an angry group of Indians. The Indians were drinking an ill-making tea, and when one man died from it, the rest blamed the travelers. Esteban pretended to cure the tea then drank it, and the Indians were happy with them again. But he became ill soon after. When I read this book, I felt a feeling that made me feel more than happy, and yet at the same time sad. This mixed emotion is a very rare and powerful feeling. I think you’ll want to read this book because maybe you will have the same feeling I did!

Review from 10 year old boy, "At first it seemed a little boring, but then it got interesting and turned out to be a great book".

We both found this kind of boring. I realize there probably aren't many books from this historical time period so I would definitely recommend reading it. It's just not a terribly fun read.

I have been reading Sonlight's choice of books all along and have been impressed. I cannot stand this book. It is so poorly written. It is choppy. Half the time I cannot tell who is who in the dialogue and the flow of ideas is AWFUL. It doesn't allow the reader to "get" the idea/lesson... It spells it out in a painfully obvious way. The idea behind the book is great. The writing and the editing are horrible. I agree with one of the other reviewers... if I saw this author on another book... I would skip it, hands down!
