The Usborne World Of Animals

This was my 6 1/2 year old's favorite book this year! Although the structure of the book drove me nuts and the page layouts made me crazy, my kid loved learning about all the different animals - and she's not usually that interested in animals other than puppies! The best part, for me, was the links on each spread to an online source. Some links, I will admit, were dull or simply a pdf of the graphic already in the book (what was the point of that?). Most, however, were very interesting. It also led us to seach on YouTube video of any animal we wanted to learn about - the Houston Zoo has some great footage! We highly recommend this book!

We loved this book. Some people are put off by how much information is included on a 2-page spread, but this book is actually less busy than many Usborne books we have read. The photos are rich, detailed, and attention-grabbing. The illustrations demonstrate interesting facts in a way that young children can understand. It is not dumbed down at all. Our daughter declared that this was one of her favorite books this year.

I did not like this book. In fact, I haven't liked any of the Usborne books that we have read this year. The thoughts on a page are just all over the place. I abandoned this book and instead I am reading my K and 1st grade girls a DK book on Animals - one that talked about different animal classifications (mammals, reptiles, etc.) in general and then went into detail about different animals in that classification, and supplementing it with books from the library.

My kids really enjoy this book. I am planning on purchasing another as a gift for my nephew who loves animals.

My children LOVED this book. The pictures were great and it was a fantastic way for them to relate to the different continents as well.

We, too, love the Usborne books. My son loved the days we used this book for science. He liked the pictures in the books but really enjoyed the maps at the beginning of each section as well. Great choice!

I can not say enough about how great Usborne books are!! The pictures are so vivid. My son runs to the table to do his science work, when he know we are reading from the big Animal book. :)
