I liked Biddy because she was so good and smart. I think all the people in the world should read this book. I learned that it is good to do hard things when it is the right thing to do. (like Biddy)

Mountain Born is idyllic, serene, a bit raw at times. Although not going into extreme detail in the docking of tails, it was a bit shocking. I didn't realize sheep were born with tails! The language used is very flowery, descriptive, and at times hard to wade through. I found myself having to re-read bits not because the girls asked me to, but because I didn't quite understand what Ms. Yates was trying to say.
This is a story of shepherds on a mountain, their everyday trials, yearly traditions, and the quiet life they lead. We discussed the parallel between these sheep and Jesus, which was rich and rewarding.

It was really hard for my 6yr old son to sit through and he loves being read to! The language was difficult at times and had a slow pace. Beautiful story yes but not for everyone!

This is a gentle book. I think you need to read it for what it is. It's a picture of the pastoral, peaceful life. For that, I liked it. It was a good contrast to other books in this CORE like Mr. Popper's Penguins which were pure silliness.

This is a good story but not one that my 7 year old was excited about. We read it because it was part of the work.

I really liked the story when it was over. Good analagy to the Lord being our Shepherd. however, I think that was lost on my 1st graders, who had trouble paying attention and comprehending aspects of the story. The language was hard for them to understand. I agree that this book would be better appreciated by older children.

Sweet and tender book about life as a shepherd. The Life lessons, hard work instilled in the son, and the struggles were lovely illustrations of our life with The Lord our Shepherd. My 9 y/o's attention was a little short sometimes but he enjoyed the story all the same.

My six year old enjoyed this book but the three year old did not sit through it at times.

I agree with all that's been stated. This book is quite advanced for this age. I believe that it would be more appreciated and better understood at the ages listed on the back of the book (9+). My daughter (7) however, did enjoy it very much. We slowed down the pace because the chapters are quite long. Hindsight, I would save this book for another year. 4 stars only because of the core placement.

My daughter, age 5, loved this book, and so did I! A great introduction to someone living a completely different way of life to us in busy London. A wonderful story that also related to us about how God is our Shepherd!
