Gooney Bird dazzles (and inspires) her classmates with "absolutely true" stories, while they learn what makes a story good or bad.
"Everyone has all sorts of stories to tell," says the feisty, friendly heroine of this laugh-out-loud book from a two-time Newbery Medalist.

This book is great. At first I was concerned about Gooney Bird being deceptive, but that's not the case at all. Her motives are honest as well as the stories. A very fun book.

What riotous, clever fun this book is! Gooney Bird is a second grader who moved from China on a flying carpet with a cat consumed by a cow! In her “absolutely true stories” Gooney Bird charmed our girls’ hearts from the beginning, from her wacky outfits to her outrageous (but absolutely true) stories.
Through a play on words, Gooney Bird Greene weaves hilarious stories for her second grade classroom that, after hearing the title, you think you know what the story is about, but you may have definitely misjudged. I won’t tell you how on earth a 7-year-old girl flew on a flying carpet or the details about the cat consumed by a cow, I’ll leave that for you to discover with your own children.

My 7-yr-old has been putting "suddenly" in her stories ever since Gooney Bird Greene. Loved it.

Absolutely a fun read for my dd5 and ds7! I wanted to keep reading as much as they did

Gooney Bird Greene was about an interesting kid that came to Watertower Elementary School. She liked to tell stories, and they were very interesting stories. They made everybody confused because she made the class think one thing, but she was really talking about something else. I think this book was funny and interesting and fun to read. My favorite chapter was "The Prince, the Palace, and the Diamond Earrings" because The Prince was really The Prinns and the Palace was really an ice cream shop. by Cornelius Pavlic age 6

Loved this goofy book! Agree that it is a great way to teach storytelling.

Simply fun book that we really enjoyed. My 9 y/o son loved her stories. The element of her being herself and not worrying about what others thought of her, was endearing. A good read for young children who feel 'misunderstood' when The Lord created them very special.

Great book! My kids enjoyed it and I did too. It's a very interesting way to introduce aspects of good storytelling to young children.

We really enjoyed this one. Very fun and did teach some good vocabulary. My girls (7 and 4 1/2) ended up listening to all the audiobooks in the series over and over.

My boys were not looking forward to this book, but ended up loving it. Although Gooney Bird seems too smart to be a 2nd grader the book does go over important aspects of telling a story. While the reader is being entertained they are also learning.
