Grammar practice made practical.
Have you finished The Grammar Ace but still got the grammar blues? Bogged down in dangling participles? (Wait ... what is a participle anyway?)
Never fear: Grammar 5 is here!
This program helps students gain mastery of grammatical concepts and build writing skills through 72 self-directed lessons. Let the straightforward (and engaging) explanations and exercises abound.
Grammar 5 is perfect for students who are ready to put their basic grammar knowledge to use. In each lesson students will:
- Read a passage of excellent writing (from books in Sonlight Core F)
- Learn or review a grammatical concept featured in that passage
- Complete exercises that help them put that concept into practice
- Practice concepts they've learned in past lessons
As crucial concepts surface repeatedly throughout the year, your young writers will master the tools they need to succeed on standardized tests. And more importantly, they'll become solid writers who know how to wield their words.
For the teacher (you!), Grammar 5 may be a dream come true. Students guide themselves, but a thorough Answer Key and quick-reference Grammar Guide give you the tools to help them succeed. You even have a matrix telling you which skills they'll cover and review each week. Grammar 5 is the perfect supplement to any Language Arts program.
This easy-to-follow, self-paced program will reinforce the grammar your children really need to know ... in a format you're all bound to enjoy!

I do NOT like this grammar set. Many concepts are introduced that have not been previously covered in SL's LA that we have been using (i.e. complex predicates). That would be fine if these new concepts were thoroughly covered before moving on to another concept. This book jumps around way too much and tries to cover too many concepts within the same lesson. My other concern with this book is that the examples are not the best. They were chosen from the literature that your child reads in this core, which I thought was fantastic at first. However, the examples are more advanced if your child hasn't had any formal grammar training than what he/she has had in the basic SL LA program. The examples only created more confusion. It would be better to give an example of the concept using a simpler sentence, and build up to the more complex examples. We are going to try Easy Grammar Grade 5 instead. I don't want my son to absolutely hate this without giving it a chance. We both dislike this set of books. Perhaps because this is our first time studying formal grammar other than what SL includes in its LA program.

My oldest daughter did the old SL LA, and had no problems when we started Latin. My younger daughter did the new SL LA, and had a hard time making it through Grammar Ace. This was a perfect skill building tool. She struggled, sometimes mightily, but the tool did it's job. She just finished it, and I think she will be well prepared for Latin next year. As she herself said, beaming with pride at how far she's come, "Mom, when I started this, I didn't even understand what a direct object was!"

My oldest daughter did Sonlight's old language arts, full of sentence diagramming/labeling with lots of "gerunds" and "predicate nominatives". It was HARD. But she learned a lot and my younger kids lack the vocabulary to describe their sentences. It's harder for me to teach them to write without being able to accurately define the words: "this would be stronger without the dangling participle." The Grammar skills 5 fills that gap. I also think that sort of knowledge is part of being an educated English speaker and appreciate the help in educating them in that area. I love this product!
