Focuses on peoples in the least evangelized areas of the world: North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. You may wish to use this program, with no modification, as the basis for teaching one or more children from 9-13 years old. With modification, it may be used with students from 8-14 years old. Advanced students will require additional reading assignments.
Curriculum Overview:
More focused on cultures than history, the Sonlight® Core 5 will astonish and delight you with the intimate introductions it provides to peoples and cultures few Americans ever think about. Core 5 leads you on an ambling trek from the South Pacific, through Australia, up to Japan, through southeast Asia, India, China, the Middle East and, eventually, to North Africa. At each stop along the way, you will come to know and love the people you meet.
Your journey begins in Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea) as you accompany John Dekker and his family (Protestant missionaries) as they establish their home among the Dani people, a tribal group who have previously had little contact with Westerners. While there, you will be brought face to face with cultural issues like the meaning of time, money, and clothing. You will also consider what the Gospel of Jesus Christ can mean to animist peoples who live in mortal fear of evil spirits.
Three weeks later your children will join Amy Wilson, an Anglo girl from Melbourne, Australia, as she visits an Aboriginal town in the outback. There they will meet Lana, an Aboriginal girl who, for good reasons, wonders whether she should associate with Anglos. In the midst of a dangerous adventure in which your children, Amy, and Lana are forced to stick together, your children will come to understand some of the special strengths of Lana's culture and the difficulties her people face.
While you enjoy these intimate fictional and biographical journeys, your children will also learn about the peoples and places they're visiting through fact-filled World Book Encyclopedia articles. Together, you'll be devouring Read-Aloud adventures like Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Master Puppeteer, and Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze. Along with these books, a Sonlight-exclusive, two-hour video will permit you to experience in sight, sound and color, the immediate reality of over 54 peoples and cities around the world.
Your Core 5 trek will grant you a wealth of cultural insight. It will cause you to laugh and cry. Most of all, it will change you as well as your view of the world.
Some people wonder why we include this trek in our series of courses. The peoples among whom you will spend most of your time this year comprise 90 percent of the world's unevangelized peoples. Many of these groups have no Christians living among them — not even a single missionary. Something must change if God's promise is ever to come true that Jesus will redeem some "from every tribe and language and people and nation" (Revelation 5:9). We want your children to be aware of this "other half" of the world, pray for these people, and perhaps go to live among them!
The 5th Year Bible course looks at the cultures, literary structures and history of the Bible through the eyes of a Wycliffe Bible Translator. It's a fascinating study covering Genesis 1 through the Israelites' flight from Egypt. Straight Bible readings this year include 1 and 2 Kings, Daniel, the Gospel of John, plus 1 and 2 Corinthians, Hebrews, and James. Please note that the Bible program is not included in the Core package anymore. However, Bible readings are still scheduled in the Instructor's Guides. See the Bible 5 program.
