Discover key elements of American history from the War Between the States, till today with Special emphasis on U.S. social history. You may wish to use this program, with modification, as the basis for teaching more than one child in 2nd through 7th grades.
Curriculum Overview:
Sonlight Curriculum? Core 4 picks up where Core 3 leaves off. It covers the period from 1850 to the present.
This exciting tour provides an overview of political, economic, and military history through books 3 and 4 of Franklin Escher, Jr.'s The Story of the U.S.A.
The real thrill of Core 4 comes in Daniel Boorstin's Landmark History of the American People. There you will find out how Americans' unique perspective-such as our egalitarianism, our desire for change, and our "can-do" spirit contributed to inventions like ready-to-wear clothing, department stores, and skyscrapers. You'll discover why standard time zones and "fast food" came into existence. You'll examine how mass immigration, women's suffrage, the labor movement and the Great Depression impacted the social, political, and economic climate of the country. You'll also discuss race relations.
Besides the main tour through U.S. history, you and your children will take side trips to South America and Canada.
You will find yourself living in the midst of history through Sonlight Curriculum? Read-Alouds like:
- All Sail Set (the Newbery Honor story of the greatest clipper ship ever built)
- Little Britches (the story of a real 8-year-old boy who moved to the prairies west of Denver in the early 1900s)
- Cheaper by the Dozen
- Moccasin Trail
- Miracles on Maple Hill
- and half a dozen more.
While you may have a difficult time laying aside the Read-Alouds each day, your children will have a tough time putting down the books they are assigned to read on their own:
- Fred Gipson's Old Yeller
- O'Dell's Sing Down the Moon
- Bette Bao Lord's In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson
- and so many more!
Similar to the Core 3 program, Core 4 focuses on social more than civil, political, or military history. We reserve deep study in these areas for later years (see Core 7 and 10). Our concern at this level is to give your children an overview of American history, and an abiding thirst to learn more.
Fourth Year Bible readings include the Gospel of John, St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians, 1st and 2nd Samuel, the story of Esther, and a few Psalms and Proverbs. Besides the straight Bible reading, the program also includes two extremely popular workbook-oriented Bible studies: Learning About God from A to Z and Starting Strong. Please note that the Bible program is not included in the Core package anymore. However, Bible readings are still scheduled in the Instructor's Guides. See the Bible 4 program.
We give students one major research project during the year: a report on their home state or a planet. Of course the Core 4 instructor's guide explains the entire research and writing process.
Don't want to spend two years studying American history at this time? Please see the special program developed just for you, "One-Year Intro to American History".
Includes Bible reading and memory, History, Readers and Read-Alouds, plus a Core Instructor's Guide 4TB. Does not include any of the Required Resources or Recommended Resources.
Estimated time requirement for all subjects, including Science, Math and Language Arts on either the four- or five-day-per-week schedule: Child: 3 1/2-5 hrs/day; Parent: 2-3 hrs/day direct involvement; availability for remainder of time.
