Required Resource for Core Level 4. A fascinating introduction to American culture as it has shaped and been shaped by events over the past 350 years. Winsomely written by the former librarian of Congress. Profusely illustrated. Boorstin focuses on the social forces and cultural influences that have made Americans the unique people they are.

Partially because his material is unfamiliar, but partially because he writes in a more mature fashion than most younger children are used to, we supplement Boorstin's book (and, if need be, encourage you to replace it for the first half of the year) with The Story of the USA books.

Oversize pb, illus, two vols. in one.

(This book is included in Cores 3 and 3+4.)

My sentiments exactly, Katie G. There's got to be something better out there.

I don't believe I've ever been taught a bunch of the details of history that are covered in this book. While the text can be a little dry at times, esp. in the beginning, it just gets better and better as you go along. By Core 4, you start looking forward to your Landmark readings as much as your RA readings.

We love this book. It is still on our shelf for reference after 11 years.

We really liked this book and thought it was much better than the Story of the USA workbooks, especially for modern history which is extremely liberally biased in Story of the USA. We appreciated that Landmark was fairly neutral and we did not find it dry at all.

I might be the 1st, I see, to not rave about this book. We found this book laborious and VERY DRY. I could barely read it and the kids didn't follow it at all. What drudgery! After A Child's History of the World...I guess we're spoiled. I finally gave up with this one! And it's a TWO YEAR book! ugh! Sorry!

I used the edited readings for the first sections - even marked them in my book so I don't have to look it up again next time. It greatly helped as I could tell my younger student was tuning out if I read too much out of this book in Core 3. By Core 4, we were enjoying this book very much - even my daughter who tuned out earlier. I learned so much from this book - so did my kids. I'm looking forward to reading it again with my younger two kids!

I have to agree this book is a complete bomb after reading "A Child's History of the World." Perhaps this book could be replaced with "The Rainbow Book of American History" by Earl Schenck Miers with illustrations by James Daugherty as this book was utilized some years ago with the Sonlight American history cores.

Agreeing with those who have said that it starts out dry and slow. We didn't use the edited readings - but I'm sure that would've helped hugely! My 8 and 11 year olds absolutely loved the book though! I did too! We found the information so fascinating - they'd beg me to read more once the scheduled selection was finished. This is one book I'm not willing to part with! (Though, have loaned it out several times already.)

My sons (then 12 year old twins) and I absolutely loved this text. I never thought there would be a "text" that one could love. The boys could hardly wait for the next day when we would read the next assignment.

This is an excellent resource! There are many notes about doing an abridged version of this text - which may be a good idea for younger children. My 11 year old reads every bit of the assignments - unedited and thoroughly enjoys it. There are some incredible facts presented in an interesting way and I am so glad we just opened it up and tried it out, despite the warnings I had heard.
