Item #3H29

Your purchase of this product will allow us to donate a portion of the total cost of your order to Sonlight's charities. We are thrilled that, last year, we were able to contribute $2.25 to these organizations for every "The Landmark History of the American People" we sold. We look forward to doing the same this year!

Required Resource for Core Level 4. A fascinating introduction to American culture as it has shaped and been shaped by events over the past 350 years. Winsomely written by the former librarian of Congress. Profusely illustrated. Boorstin focuses on the social forces and cultural influences that have made Americans the unique people they are.

Partially because his material is unfamiliar, but partially because he writes in a more mature fashion than most younger children are used to, we supplement Boorstin's book (and, if need be, encourage you to replace it for the first half of the year) with The Story of the USA books.

Oversize pb, illus, two vols. in one.

(This book is included in Cores 3 and 3+4.)

We went through this book with my older children and really enjoyed the way that it read like a novel rather than an encyclopedia. I am ordering another one for my next group of children.

This is our first time with this book. What a painful process it is reading this book. It can definitely get a third and fourth grader disinterested in history. Even after editing the recommended sections, it simply does not encourage a love of history. I sure hope it gets better as they promised.

I used the edited readings for the first sections - even marked them in my book so I don't have to look it up again next time. It greatly helped as I could tell my younger student was tuning out if I read too much out of this book in Core 3. By Core 4, we were enjoying this book very much - even my daughter who tuned out earlier. I learned so much from this book - so did my kids. I'm looking forward to reading it again with my younger two kids!

We really liked this book and thought it was much better than the Story of the USA workbooks, especially for modern history which is extremely liberally biased in Story of the USA. We appreciated that Landmark was fairly neutral and we did not find it dry at all.

Agreeing with those who have said that it starts out dry and slow. We didn't use the edited readings - but I'm sure that would've helped hugely! My 8 and 11 year olds absolutely loved the book though! I did too! We found the information so fascinating - they'd beg me to read more once the scheduled selection was finished. This is one book I'm not willing to part with! (Though, have loaned it out several times already.)

I have to agree this book is a complete bomb after reading "A Child's History of the World." Perhaps this book could be replaced with "The Rainbow Book of American History" by Earl Schenck Miers with illustrations by James Daugherty as this book was utilized some years ago with the Sonlight American history cores.

This is the first book ever in all the Sonlight curriculums we have tried that we do not enjoy. The text is extremely dry and difficult to read. My boy's love for history disappeared completely after the first 3 chapters. Does anyone know of another book we can use to replace this with? I think this is far above the average Grade 3 student.

My sentiments exactly, Katie G. There's got to be something better out there.

I might be the 1st, I see, to not rave about this book. We found this book laborious and VERY DRY. I could barely read it and the kids didn't follow it at all. What drudgery! After A Child's History of the World...I guess we're spoiled. I finally gave up with this one! And it's a TWO YEAR book! ugh! Sorry!

My sons (then 12 year old twins) and I absolutely loved this text. I never thought there would be a "text" that one could love. The boys could hardly wait for the next day when we would read the next assignment.
