10 weeks into this program, I am switching. Just is not working. I will keep the IG and refer to it and make sure we are covering all the bases. We will continue with the readers but use a different program entirely.

I had a similar problem that other people mentioned in that I feel the reading level and the language arts level do not match up very well. I used this with my first grader who can read the beginners Bible with ease and fluency. I have her do a half hour a day of independent reading with a reading log, because I don't feel like the reading alone is much of a stretch for her. But the spelling lists are sometimes very hard. She went to public school for kindergarten and did not do much spelling or phonics beyond basic CVC words, though evidently they learned to read pretty well. I appreciate the concepts behind copywork and discussing mechanics in the context of real language use, and the activities that discuss things like similies or descriptions. But the writing assignments are far beyond my daughter's abillity. Just because a child can read paragraphs does not mean their handwriting skills are up to writing paragraphs. Many times we do the writing activities orally and I write down what she says, but this has created an unwillingness on her part to try to write anything herself. I wish the Sonlight writing was not connected to the readers and you could pick a level more appropriate to the skills of your child.

I have a special needs child and we used the easy readers for grade 2 and although my daughter also loved the readers I have to agree she had some difficulty with it. The spelling portion just is not organized very well she was lucky to get half of them right. we plan to use the sequential spelling and used the red llatl this year with alot of success but other than that we love sonlight and my other two girls who are not special needs enjoyed the language just fine. but for a special needs child it is doable but maybe a little challenging but will require tons of one on one still debating rather we will use it again with her.

Although the readers are wonderful, and I love the idea that the written work corresponds with the reading, the composition, amount of writing, and concepts are incredibly advanced for a child who is reading the Beginner's Bible. IF your child's writing level is similar to their reading level, this Language Arts program may not work for them. We had to replace spelling with another program immediately, and are deciding that we will either be picking and choosing and drastically modifying the writing activities, or replacing it all together.

I want to mention right away that I give the readers selection 5 stars! My son LOVES The Beginners Bible and asks me several times a day if he can read more to me! The rest of the program, however, is just not for us. My son isn't ready for the amount of writing that is asked of him. I have decided to ignore most of the activities in the schedule and instead I am using the copy-work passages, with Write Start, for handwriting and copy-work, the Explode The Code workbooks for phonics and spelling, and Wordly Wise for vocabulary. That seems to be working well for us. I do still recommend this program because of how easily it can be modified.

I am very happy with this LA program. I have tried so many and SL offers the best of all I wanted in a program. I really love CM type LA and felt that SL really offered this in a manageable format for me. Daily scheduled readers, copywork, hands on activities, great easy to follow IG for parents. As Vonna shared in her review, my daughter has been thrilled with herself being able to read the Beginner's Bible. We've used SL LA K and LA 1 and I have to say that I feel my dd had advanced in her reading skills and confidence because of SL's LA programs. LA is something we look forward to every day.

My son did well with this program of readers. The Beginner's Bible was challenging, and I had to help him with some of the names, but he was SO proud when he finished it! And we really loved Frog and Toad. All of the books were quality selections.
