I agree with the person that said this is not at 3rd grade reading level. It's more like 1st or 2nd grade max. But the color and bells and whistles are appealing to my boy who likes visual stuff. The one thing though that really bugs me about this book is that they always list 3 reading books in each unit that "you and your child might enjoy reading together....look for them in your local library." I can tell you that these are almost always the most OBSCURE books and are nearly impossible to find at my local library, which happens to be the Los Angeles public library and has millions of books in their catalog. Many of the books MCP Phonics suggests reading aren't even available thru the L.A. library system, and certainly not thru the smaller systems in the neighboring communities. So I find it totally odd that they recommended the reading books they did to correspond with the units. Lastly, there are mistakes in this book, the most recent ones we noticed are on pages 129 and 130 regarding vowel pairs. "OW" is definitely NOT a vowel pair, since when is "W" a vowel???? Not a huge deal in the big scheme of things, but totally confused my son today.

My 7 y.o. often asks if she can do this book, she loves it! Its great for when Im busy with her siblings work and I can just say, please do 2 more pages in your phonics book, and she can manage it mostly on her own.

I realize Cores are not necessary grade level. That being said, this book would work for 1st or 2nd grade in my opinion. I ordered it for my 3rd grader as it was recommended as a resource for LA3.

My daughter really needed this in 2nd grade. She is not a good speller and struggle the first week or so with this book. She finished Explode the Code 1, 2, 3 last year which was very easy and I didn't feel that 4, 5, and 6 was going to be very valuable. My son did them and flew right through them. Now, in our 33rd week, my daughter does well and has learned some better spelling through the phonics. This also brings syllables in which can be a struggle at times, but its still good to introduce now.

I am glad we picked this consumable for our son age 7, soon to be 8. He struggles with reading. He really responds to the colorful photographic method used in this workbook. (resource: Reading Reflex by Carmen McGuinness. Item #RR117) He told me today that he likes this book better than his last consumable, which was Explode The Code 5. This book really is a brush of fresh air for him. Thank you Sonlight!
