(For Grade 2.) These phonics workbooks fit all our criteria: systematic phonics and spelling rules, exercises that force a child to think through the spelling of a word and comprehend what he is reading, and simple, non-distracting graphics.
- Book 4 covers compound words ( pancake, catfish, etc), common suffixes ( -ful, -est, -ness, etc.), syllable divisions, open and closed syllables, and vowel digraphs ( ea, ai, etc.).
- Book 5 deals with -ed, -al_, ol_, -ild, -ind, qu-, and -ey words, and three-consonant blends ( thr-, shr-, str-, etc.).
- Book 6 deals with -ar, -or, -er, -ir, -ur, wor-, war-, -igh, -oo-, -ea, -ie, -oi, -oy, -ou-, -ow, -au, -aw, -ew, -ui-, and -ue words.
Note: These workbooks are part of an optional workbook series for those who want to supplement our "natural" language-learning approach. They are scheduled in the Language Arts for Readers 2 Instructor's Guide. Answer keys for the tests are also found in the Language Arts for Readers 2 Instructor's Guide.
Three cheers for Explode the Code. My oldest stopped using Explode the Code after #5 because she was kind of tired of it, and we thought she was progressing on her own. She eventually stalled out, so I gave her the Let's Go Learn reading assessment and discovered her weak areas which turned out to be the very areas covered by Explode the Code 6-8. Ok, this was a major "duh" moment for me! Here I was trying to figure out the easiest way to help her in those last few areas and help was there in the best format of all, good ol' Explode the Code. — "Ginny, 12 April 2005 |
