Required Resource for Core Levels 1-2, Condensed 1+2, and Alt 7. This is the 1997 hardback edition (last updated in 1994) of the famous classic by the headmaster of the Calvert School of Baltimore. Hillyer presents a delightful narrative history of the world from "the beginning" to the mid-1990s. A warm, grandfatherly telling of a real story. Hb.

2 out of 5 stars by JACQUELINE M on 2009-11-13
This book has been disappointing in many ways, but most glaring is the omission of the resurrection of Christ. The crucifixion is mentioned and then the author jumps to how the apostles spread Christianity.

My kids were uncertain about this book as it doesn't have many pictures (the artwork it does have are great), but it is written in such an engaging way - they have really enjoyed it. I love it as well. The first few chapters make for wonderful discussions about what other people believed and believe today.

We really like this book. I would get interested in it and keep reading it to myself after the day's reading was through. I finally learned to do the reading right before break time...that way I got a few more minutes in while the kids were eating snack. :)

I was a little skeptical of this book at first, but it turned out to be a wonderful primer on world history. I love how it incorporates African history (only a little bit, but more than I learned in school.) My son has learned and retained lots from this book.

If one ignores the first 2-3 chapters they would find a well written, engaging history of the world written with a Christian world view. It is a pleasure to read and a pleasure to hear. All my children have read it 3 times through. The history is brilliant, concise and correct.

We love this book. I tell my kids the author may not have known Jesus from some of his comments, but he sure knew a great deal of history.

This book has been a favorite of our daughters with Core 1. She likes the artwork, I as a parent enjoy the literary style in which the book is written.

I always am excited when a chapter from this book is assigned for history that day. It is easy to read, engaging, and short. Usually has a strong tie-in to the usborne history books, which are great but much more labor-intensive to read. It pulls things together for my daughter. I haven't read any of the forum comments about it, so I didn't realize that there were disgruntled readers - we love it.

I bought this book without reading any reviews. After reading the first chapter I am returning it. It is not written from a christian worldview.

This book gets griped about on the forums. I recommend ignoring the complaints, because satisfied users are unlikely to post about how well it is working for them. They don't need to. If you form your own opinion, you might be surprised. We didn't take to it that well in Core 1. We read it, but it wasn't a favorite. It became one, though, during Core 2, probably because ancient history just isn't quite so exciting to us as the renaissance, kings and castles, and more modern history are.
