Catalog Correction: In the 2008 Sonlight catalog, on page 39, we mistakenly said that this Core package includes two Readers sets (2 Regular and 2 Advanced). If you order item #2C2X5, you will receive one set of Readers: 2 Advanced.
A broad-sweep survey of world history from the Dark Ages to the present for early elementary age children. You may wish to use this program, with modification, as the basis for teaching one child in 2nd through 4th, or more than one child in K through 4th grades. Many families have combined Intro to World History with the World History Core program 6 to teach students from early elementary through middle school ages at one time.
Curriculum Overview:
Let Sonlight Curriculum® Year 2 take you and your children on a wonder-filled tour of the most important historical ports of call, from the fall of Rome to the present. You'll visit the Vandals, the Huns, the Byzantine Empire and many more civilizations. You will also learn about:
- The rise of the Christian Monasteries and the rise of Islam
- Charlemagne, Alfred, and the Viking raiders
- The advent of castles, knights, villages, and towns in Europe
- The Norman Conquest and the Crusades
- The Magna Carta
- Genghis Khan and the Golden Age of Chinese technology
We've barely mentioned half the destinations you'll visit on this five-star tour, let alone the delight you'll find in your tour-guides: V.M. Hillyer, the late headmaster of the Calvert School in Baltimore, and the award-winning artists and authors of the Usborne World History book.
In addition to your broad-sweep introduction to world history, you and your children will enjoy the trademark pleasures of Sonlight Curriculum®'s award-winning literature: Read-Alouds like:
- Lois Lenski's The Strawberry Girl
- Marguerite de Angeli's The Door in the Wall
- Weil's delightful Red Sails to Capri
- and over a dozen others.
For older students, Advanced Readers like:
- Sid Fleischman's Newbery Medal-winning The Whipping Boy
- Beverly Cleary's perennial favorites Henry and Ribsy and Emily's Runaway Imagination
- Marguerite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague and Mustang: Wild Spirit of the West
- and many others!
You'll also read gripping biographies of true heroes like Joanne Shetler ( And the Word Came with Power) and Gladys Aylward ( The Adventure of a Lifetime).
This is a rich program that will meet the primary content needs of just about any family with students in Kindergarten through 4th grade, and beyond.
The Bible program this year begins with an overview of the peoples, places, cultures, and events of Scripture from Genesis to Jesus' day. The Bible readings in the first portion of the year follow the same pattern. Later in the year, you will read the book of Joshua, St. Paul's first and second letters to the Thessalonians, his first and second letters to Timothy, the three letters of St. John, and several Psalms and Proverbs. Please note that the Bible program is not included in the Core package anymore. However, Bible readings are still scheduled in the Instructor's Guides. See the Bible 2 program.
Have older children? Check out the 6th Year program! It has been designed to work very closely with the 2nd Year curriculum.
Includes History, Readers and Read-Alouds, plus a Core Instructor's Guide 2TB. The Readers in the "One-Year Intro to World History" Core Regular Readers program were chosen for use by second grade students: those who have progressed to the point where they can read long-vowel, five- and six-letter words moderately fluently. Note, however, that the readers are not at all tied into the subject matter covered by the rest of the "One-Year Intro to World History" Core program. If your child enjoys reading books with pictures only every two to five pages (or less), and that have 120 to 250 words or more on a page, we recommend that you purchase one of our Advanced Readers (2C2X4 or 2C2X5).
Estimated time requirement on either the four or Five-Day-per-week schedule for all subjects, including Science, Math and Language Arts: Child: 1.5-2.5 hrs/day; Parent: 45 mins-1.5 hrs/day direct involvement, availability for the remainder of the time.
