The mountainous island of Capri has a mystery and it takes the innkeeper's son, Michele, and three foreigners to get to the bottom of it. A great read-aloud!

I was surprised how much my daughters 7 and 10 liked this book. We, too, often time things by singing or reciting, so we could relate to Mama. My 10 year old often says "Mama Mia" in surprise. We live in Europe, and are more used to 'old world' than perhaps some Americans. We might appreciate this aspect more than others.

We all enjoyed this book. It took a little time to get into it, but we are so glad we stuck with it. The kids grew more and more curious about the grotto as we read on. When you get to the end of the book, do an online image search with your kids for "Capri" and "Blue Grotto". It will help the book come alive. Reading this made us want to visit Capri!

We all loved this book, I sooooo wanted to read the whole thing in one day! The way it was written it kept you kept wanting to know what would happen! It was great!

I'd also recommend switching out this book from the Sonlight curriculum. It's risky to use a book based mostly on local color for students this young. The plot is weak: the entire narrative hangs on discussing an event that takes place in the last chapter. Young children aren't interested in discussions that last for 9 chapters. But I still love the Sonlight curriculum.

It was hard to get into at first, but well worth the effort! We all enjoyed the adventure, and I enjoyed reading with the different accents. There were some funny lines in this, which we quoted even after the fact!! Hang in there!

Wow! Some of the reviews are harsh! My 7year old boy and 9 year old girls were riveted to this book. We loved it and read for an hour stait to finish it at the end! Then we ran to the computer to look up the Blue Grotto-since I hadn't even heard of it! Don't give up on this book or skip it! It is a cultural experience and an exciting tale.

My 8 year old love this book, at 1st I did not find it fun to read but after seeing how into the book he was I was happy to read it to him.

My 8 yr old and I really enjoyed this book. I'm not sure he really understood all of the "lessons learned" or underlying meanings of human nature, but it didn't keep him from enjoying the book. Michele's mother's cooking provided us both with enjoyable humor.

This book was ok, it was very hard to get into. Halfway through we started getting a little more into it, and were excited to find out the ending, which wasn't very exciting.

We love this book because it is a great story of a boy who is committed to helping his family and being loyal to his friends. We think it is funny, and my daughter sometimes quotes Angelo. We read it early this year because we all had happy memories of reading it before.
