I agree with Nicole T and Kristian W. These books are written by a very biased author who repeatedly editorializes. Basically there are some facts about US History mixed in with why she thinks America sucks. She rails on the US for ever having considered slavery (duh) to why capitalism has its downsides, like, 'some people are poor'. As opposed to Communism where EVERYONE is poor and is NEVER allowed to write a book like this? Come on Sonlight, this is the second liberal history book you have recommended. It's getting old.

I love these books. I've read several myself and was excited when my daughters (13 & 15) got to use them. I've been impressed at how much they learn, how easy it is for them to read them, and how much they enjoy them.

We will be returning these books after reading several reviews of them on the website called "The Textbook League". It is website that reviews public school textbooks. Here is a link to one of the three articles: http://www.textbookleague.org/121hakm.htm
Further, why would Sonlight even offer a textbook that is used in a public schools? What happened to the theory of using great books to teach history? This set of 11 books is neither great nor a "book". It is a textbook, which in my opinion should be a swear word. by Nicole T. on 7-30-2010

My 14 year old son read these and has said it seem as if the books are based on one persons point of view. It seems to us there are discrepancies between Joy Hakim's books and other US History books. Information has been left out of her books vs. other books.

My 13/14-year-old daughter read these to herself and said, "I really liked reading these books. They helped me understand American history in a way that I never had before. Some chapters are boring, but most make history exciting or interesting. I like the way the author seems to be talking to me, and I like that there are so many pictures throughout the books."
