When he accidentally kills a Manchu, a Chinese boy is sent to America to join his father, an uncle, and other Chinese working to build a tunnel for the transcontinental railroad through the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1867.

Based on the experiences of the Chinese who built the transcontinental railroad at the time of the War Between the States, this is the story of one boy's fight for survival amid brutal working conditions and bitter cold. Stunning.

My 14-year-old daughter read this book and said, "This was a good book. I never knew before why so many Chinese were in San Franciso when I went there for a visit. But because of this book, I now know they moved there from China to work on the railroad. I also learned how oppressed they were."
