I am on my wife’s sign on: I am a pastor. I am going through “Why Pray” with my son. I recognized the name “John Devries” and couldn’t quite place it until I started remembering some of the stories from college where I listen to him in “Perspectives Class”, a class about missions. We sat in awe as John told story after story about prayer and missions. This book brought some of those stories and memories back. What I like most about “Why Pray” is that this is neither shallow nor heady. John has found the perfect blend of head and heart, great profundity with brevity, story telling with principles, the art of discipline balanced with our relationship with God. He has found the unspoiled equilibrium between, God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility; emphasizing the relationship with God over apprehending more knowledge about prayer, although, not shallow on wisdom or biblical support. The format of having a discussion and or a meditation is perfect for being alone or with a group. This is prayer distilled down to the bare bones. I have found myself weeping as we go through this book, meeting Jesus in every page. John is a master who has walked the path and whose spiritual depth is not barrowed from others like so many other authors of Christian devotionals. This classic will be as simple or as deep as one will allow it to be. Pastor Britt Hanson

We're only on day 8 and I already know that I want to share this book with others! It puts so many concepts into practical use for our everyday lives. If you want your life to truly be changed for the better, to walk in closer communion with our Lord, this book has great suggestions on how that can happen.

We loved this little book! 40 day devotional that focused our prayer life as a family like never before. Mr. DeVries explains what prayer is, what it's for, the power it holds, and the blessing it gives. We read it as a family in the evenings. It was engaging for everyone (age 8 to aged!). The stories and applications that Mr. DeVries tells at each point are apt and beautiful examples of God's love, power, and calling for each of us. Many nights we laughed, and most nights we were awed by God and convicted to seek change in ourselves. The difference between this and other books on prayer and possibly my favorite point is that the author also provides practical (and simple) steps to put these new lessons to action! Note: This is the first time that I have taken the time to sit down and write and book recommendation--ever! That's how pumped my family is about this book! I've just ordered a dozen to give to others.
