Accredited schools are institutions in which an agency of some type has completed a sort of quality assurance process to determine that the school’s standards and practices are up to par in order to give students the very best education possible. In a way, this is an attempt to place all schools on a level playing field, requiring the same of each institution.

At one time, most colleges only accepted students from accredited programs. This is the primary reason why many homeschoolers are concerned about accreditation. However, that has changed drastically. Now, most colleges recognize and reward homeschoolers regularly for their academic achievements.

Only institutions (not curriculum) can be accredited, which is the reason many schools, both public and private, boast of some sort of accreditation. It’s good to remember, however, that the only accreditation that is nationally recognized is that which is done through our federal government by The Department of Secondary and Elementary Education. Therefore, any other type of accreditation may or may not be recognized by higher learning institutions.

Your Instructor’s Guide is your one-stop tool for all your planning needs. While most curriculum asks you to do the planning, at Sonlight, we do it for you. All you’ll need to do is follow along in your chosen math curriculum or download the Sonlight created math schedule for your chosen program in your sonlight.com account.

There are so many options out there! Sometimes it’s hard to know which one would be the best for your child. At Sonlight, we recommend that you consider your child first.

• What type of learner is he/she?
• Is he introverted or extroverted?
• Does she enjoy workbooks, or does she prefer to be moving about while she works?

Once you figure out what type of learner your child is, you’ll want to look specifically for a curriculum that matches your child. In other words, don’t try a sit-down workbook-style curriculum for your ultra-energetic child. You’ll want to choose something that allows for a lot of movement and hands-on learning experiences.

Next, do your research to see what’s out there. Make a list of the options you think would work and why. You might even try a pros and cons list for each curriculum. Once you get a few options, take a break if you can. During this break, pray and ask God to guide you to choose the curriculum that best fits your child’s learning style as well as your goals and ideals as the parent.
