8th Grade Homeschool Overview
History options from different angles
Sonlight has found that good books are not limited to a narrow age range, therefore, for your 8th grade year of study, you have lots of options. You can choose from part 2 of lower level American History; the Eastern Hemisphere; World History; or an in-depth look at American History from Columbus to the present. Any one of these programs will provide an excellent year of study.
8th Grade History
This year you have lots of options to study, but, it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Are you hoping to combine your student with a younger sibling? Are they ready for Highschool work? Are you looking to study cultures from the other side of the world? You can successfully use any of these as your history base for the year.
If you choose:
Intro to American History, you'll work through the 2nd half of American History, from the Civil War to the present.
The Eastern Hemisphere, you'll have the opportunity to explore Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the South Pacific. A stand out program from Sonlight, this one year study covers a part of the world where a huge percentage of the world's population, and ninety percent of all unevangelized people, call home.
Ancient History, you'll examine the connected flow of human history, from creation through the 1600s; the 1600s to the present, or, a combined year from creation to the present around the world.
American History, you'll be going deeper into your study of American History. You'll get a backstage pass to see the players of our history as real people. Move chronologically to discover fascinating empires before Columbus. See why Benedict Arnold became a traitor. Meet the founding fathers who dared to create a Constitution that has become the model for countries around the world. Walk with courageous Sacajawea as she navigates the adventure of a lifetime. Survive WWII with a Japanese-American family in a California internment camp. See the daily struggles of normal African Americans who courageously changed history through the Montgomery Bus Boycott. While you may have touched on these subjects before, it's an opportunity to delve deeper into these subjects.
8th Grade Lesson Plans
By 8th grade your student is likely ready to exhibit some independence, in that vein, you may remain as involved as you like, but if your students are ready, they can follow the Instructor's Guide and direct their own daily studies.
Sonlight's Instructor's Guides (IG) provide a book-by-book, and subject-by-subject schedule, and include things like notes, maps, and activity sheets. They are a tool to help you be confident in your teaching and offer the help you need along the way.
If you choose one of our numbered programs, in this case 100, the format of the guide shifts to separate parent and student guides, so they are able to do their work more independently. The student guide replaces activity sheets and offers them a schedule, as well as notes, information, and questions for them.
IGs are included with your History / Bible / Literature or All-Subjects Package, as well as Sonlight's Science and Language Arts programs and can be used for record keeping, a daily schedule, notes, or any combination of the three.
8th Grade Literature and Language Arts
With the start of numbered levels, we no longer study just Language Arts, and, it's no longer tied with our History. Our Language Arts study is now under the title of Literature.
As we move away from grammar work and general writing instruction, the focus this year is now literary analysis, comprehension and deeper thought questions. What do symbols mean? Was this character right or wrong?
Your student will learn literary terms, words like fore-shadowing and character development, even as they think through the ethical questions. They will continue to have writing assignments, along with some instruction.
If you suspect your student needs more help in grammar, check out our grammar programs, here.
We also offer optional vocabulary and analogies, a critical thinking skills workbook which can assist with SAT scores and communication generally. Check out our vocabulary section here, and analogies here.
If your student would benefit from another level, check out all of Sonlight's Language Arts options here.
8th Grade Science
Sonlight offers Apologia's Exploring Creation with Physical Science, with the addition of the Sonlight-exclusive Schedule Plus. We have chosen to offer the CD-ROM version of the program to save you money, and it includes all of the information found in the print version, with multimedia add-ons such as animations, videos, narrations, and audio pronunciation guides.
This course is designed to be the last science course a student takes before high school biology, and discusses such topics as the atmosphere, hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, and environmentalism. This program concentrates on physics; especially the physics of motion, Newton's Laws, gravity, and astrophysics.
Taught from a Christian viewpoint with emphasis on the incredible design features apparent throughout God's creation.
