Protection from fraud
With new technology comes new, high-tech ways to steal your identity.
Criminals (the smart ones, at least) are always coming up with new ways to get your credit card numbers, passwords, social security numbers and other important information. One of these methods is to send an email that's designed to look like it's coming from a well-known, trusted source, like Sonlight. The email usually says there's a problem with your account and updates are needed. You might have also experienced this type of attempted identity theft with eBay or PayPal.
Typically, a link inside the email or a file containing a virus is attached to the message. If you download the file or click on the link, you're taken to a fake webpage that is designed to look like our site. Any information you enter there goes directly to the criminal.
But don't give up. There are ways to protect yourself and spot a fake email that appears to be from Sonlight.
We'll never ask for your personal information over email.
Many scam emails will ask you for important information, like a credit card number, bank account numbers, or passwords. We never ask for that kind of information over email.
We have a secure website.
As a general rule, any time you enter personal information on a site, the web address should start with "https://". That "s" is extremely important; it means that the site is secure. You'll notice when you're signed into your Sonlight account, the "http://" changes to "https://". That's how you know we're taking every step possible to protect your information.
Other signs we're for real, and they're not
- McAfee Secure
Located on the sidebar of our checkout pages, McAfee is the independent, third party authority we rely on to validate the security measures we've taken. They review our website daily to make sure we're still secure.
- Look for the golden padlock
Our site is protected by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology, the industry standard for protecting web communications. Because of the SSL encryption, all personal transactions on this site, financial and otherwise, are safe and protected, making them impossible to intercept or steal. If you double-click on the gold padlock on the bottom right side of your browser while placing your order, our security certificate will pop up and you can review the details of our secure website.
- Email friendly
Real emails from Sonlight will address you by your first name and will contain complete contact information from the customer service representative, marketing team, Sarita Holzmann, or another staff member. Fraudulent emails may address you by "Dear Sonlight user" or "Dear Sonlight member," but if we don't have your name, we may use a similar greeting. If you're unsure about an email from Sonlight, please contact us.
- Stay away from attachments
Sonlight offers a wide variety of downloadable .pdfs to aid and encourage you in your homeschooling journey. However, will never ask you to download an email attachment. Emails with attachments usually contain viruses that harm your computer or attempt to access your personal information. If we want to give you an attachment, we will link you to a page on sonlight.com where you can download it safely.
