An art mystery and one seriously awesome book. With bookending action in 2016, the bulk of the story takes place in 1928-1929. When Martha is expelled from school for questioning what was so bad about eating the apple, her head-of-staff mom hires her as a dishwasher for the Sewells, in their fancy house on 5th Avenue. In the mode of Mr. Hearst, Mr. Sewell owns a paper. He also has a crazy wife kept in the attic. But the wife loves her art, and so commences a mystery of pomegranates and Jane Eyre, of vaudeville and anarchists. Gorgeously written with a deliciously satisfying ending. Wholly captivating.
