This collection of mostly American history-based Read-Alouds is perfect for sharing with your elementary students. Included in Sonlight's History / Bible / Literature D program, this collection is for you if you don't need notes or a schedule, but would like some excellent supplemental reading for your children.
More than half of these book are Newbery Medalists and Honors. Secret of the Andes, about an Incan boy, beat out Charlotte's Web for the Newbery that year. The Witch of Blackbird Pond, set in Puritan New England, doesn't actually have a witch, though suspicious townsfolk wonder about a Quaker woman. It's a brilliant story of cultural differences and finding your place in the world, a definite customer favorite. Carry On, Mr. Bowditch tells about a brilliant mathematician who made navigation more safe. His seminal work is still used today. Such a great story about perseverance. Swift Rivers tells about 19th century logging, and the transportation of enormous trees from Minnesota on down the Mississippi River. This isn't a well-known aspect of settling America, but it is fascinating! Justin Morgan Had a Horse tells the captivating true story of the runt horse who had the heart and drive to do far more than anyone could have predicted (you don't have to be a horse person to like this one). One of the best-known and well-loved historical fiction stories of all time, Johnny Tremain, set in Boston during the Revolutionary War, tells of Paul Revere and the Sons of Liberty. And in Sign of the Beaver, a young settler is in danger of death in the harsh Maine wilderness until he receives help from an unexpected source.
And the other six books are outstanding as well, books to transform reluctant readers into enthusiastic book lovers. Don't miss them!
