Our family enjoys learning about the many cultures and different ways of life around the world that Sonlight provides. The literature that accompanies each Core is wonderful and the selections are made with extreme care. The questions open up another world for the children to ponder and discuss as they work their way through the books. Our family enjoys the time we spend together making learning enjoyable and exciting. After reading Walk the Worlds Rim, we headed to Mesa Verde to explore the cliff dwellings and do some investigating of our own. In the family's fourth Sonlight year, Ronnie (9), Reegan (7) and Abigail (11) are studying Cores D and E.
Through the wonderful books included in Core D, we've been able to better understand the lives of the Navajo, Hopi and Anasazi people who lived on this land. We choose Sonlight because we want learning to be enjoyable and meaningful for our children. Sonlight has been an integral piece of our transition from the city to rural life on a reservation. Books such as the American Indian Prayer Guide and Walk the Worlds Rim have opened our eyes to the ways in which people survived here and the historical wounds that still affect some of them today. Seen here reading against a rock-and-petroglyphs backdrop, Annika and Isaak (11 and 8, Core D) and Mykah (5, P3/4 Multi-Subject) have been studying with Sonight three years.
In the beginning, I pulled from different places to teach and always felt like I was missing something. Sonlight has everything laid out, so I can spend more time enjoying the learning process with my girls instead of stressing that they're not getting the whole story. We especially love the Read-Alouds, the highlight of our day. It's not uncommon for me to start reading while they lounge about, before they're drawn in and fully focused on the story, asking questions and discussing. 'I wonder what will happen to Charlotte?', my youngest pondered as we read Charlotte's Web [from Core B]. I'm so glad we found you! Emily (8) and Katie (6) are studying Core B in their second year of Sonlight.
"Sonlight has helped us create a new family culture around fantastic literature. We love having amazing books for our kids to read. We now live in a country [Fiji] where books are not readily available, libraries are sparse and there are very few stores with children's books available. The Read-Alouds became our family entertainment and provided something routine and rich for our family as we transitioned into life overseas [as missionaries for Youth With a Mission]. We're so grateful for the quality, depth and worldview Sonlight provides. The excitement of having great stories at our fingertips has moulded our family into lifelong learners!" Four-year-old Jude is enjoying Sonlight's Pre-Kindergarten program. – Kim A, Manitoba, Canada
