Instructor's Guides

The Instructor's Guides include complete, 36-week lesson plans and notes that integrate your children's various subjects into an exciting, unified learning experience. The Instructor's Guides weave your books and materials together into a cohesive full-year curriculum—it's your roadmap for the entire school year!

History, Geography, Bible reading and memorization

Journey through American history from before the Spanish conquistadors through the 1850s. Embrace the innovative spirit that characterized early American history. Meet Incans, Aztecs and Mayans, sail with Columbus, journey with Lewis and Clark, and invent with Benjamin Franklin!

Help children build a firm spiritual foundation as you share daily scripture reading and scripture memorization with the included Sing the Word! CD+digital. Watch their personal journey with the Lord flourish as they develop their own devotional habits.

Includes Sonlight's History / Bible / Literature D, Intro to American History, Year 1 of 2 (5-Day).

Literature

Sonlight offers two types of literature: Read-Alouds for parents to share with their children, and Readers for children to read on their own. The Read-Alouds offer more sophisticated story lines and rich discussion points, and the Readers offer skill-appropriate and age-appropriate reading practice, enticing children to become literate, book lovers, and eager learners.

This fourth grade All-Subjects Package includes Level D, Regular Readers. For children who are voracious readers, or are on the older end of the HBL D age range, you can add on additional Readers.

Language Arts

This year, you will be able to watch your children's writing style expand as they learn about higher-level techniques like similes, metaphors, and hyperbole. You'll use dictation exercises based on famous quotations and Bible verses to sharpen your children's ability to recognize and imitate good writing.

By 4th Grade, the language arts and history are interwoven, so, you'll be reading and writing about the events you are learning about.

Includes Language Arts D (5-Day).

Prerequisite Skill for this Grade 4 All-Subjects Package:
Children should be able to read at a fourth-grade reading level.

Spelling & Vocabulary

Sonlight includes Vocabulary study in our Language Arts Instructor's Guide. This year we add in a Spelling program with separate workbooks to continue building on what your children have learned.

Includes Spelling You See D Americana. In this program, children will use three key activities:

  • chunking: practice with English's many irregular letter patterns
  • Copywork: developing the ability to pay attention to details in print
  • Dictation: working on listening so your children can learn to decode and encode in a meaningful context

Science

The included Science D program gives your children an up-close look at the observable world and the forces behind what we can see. This year you will focus on Physics (energy, gravity, sound, electricity, and machines) and Biology (life, cells, the human body, animals, etc.). You'll also explore seas, oceans, and water, with Rachel Carson as a highlighted scientist.

This year students will also build a greenhouse and conduct botany experiments to understand what living things need. You'll learn how living things are categorized and named (taxonomy); and discover biological processes and how they work.

Sonlight's science programs have lots of hands-on activities, with the supplies you'll need already provided.

Includes Science D: Biology, Taxonomy, and Human Anatomy (5-Day).

Math

This year, the focus is on division for single and multiple-digit numbers. Division is presented as the inverse of multiplication and single-digit division facts are learned and the concepts of division and place value are applied when solving long division problems. In addition, your fourth grader will use strategies based on place value and properties of operations to divide and begin to understand division as solving for an unknown. They will work towards being able to divide any whole numbers, and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Includes Math-U-See Delta. Take a placement test to ensure you get the right level.

Resources

A few essential resources make your learning extra rich this year. The All-Subjects package includes a 3” Binder with Tabs to organize your Instructor’s Guides. We recommend adding The Timeline Book, and Markable Map and Markers if you don’t already own them. (The Timeline Book and Markable Map only need to be purchased once. You'll be using them each year).
