Footnotes :
  1. This program has at least as much science — both basic knowledge and experimentation — as any regular 3rd Grade classroom curriculum. From Sonlight standards, however, it is a relatively lightweight program for students of that age or grade level.

  2. Many clients have pleaded with us to find another word besides "challenging" to describe what we're trying to talk about. I can't think of a better word. The concern is this: that parents of precocious children will think that challenge is a "good" word; that they want to "challenge" their students: that a "moderate" program won't give their students enough intellectual stimulation. If your child is precocious and you are tempted to think of challenge as a good thing, I want to make clear to you: "moderate" programs will almost certainly provide plenty of intellectual stimulation. That is what Sonlight is known for. Sonlight Curriculum is, generally, quite advanced compared to just about anything else you are likely to find. We use the word challenging to indicate that the program is doable with students at these grade levels, but it will likely require modification: most likely, the pace will be too stiff; some of the content may simply be over the heads of students at this level, or, as in the case of the sex education material in the 5th Year program, more appropriate for older students. So why do we even mention these "challenging" options? 1) Because if you have several students to teach at one time, you may prefer to use the "challenging" option for some of your younger students. We want you to know it can be done, though it may require some adjustments. 2) Because a student at that grade level who has used Sonlight® Science for several years should be comfortable with the pace and structure of the program.

  3. Some of the language in a few of the books may seem slightly juvenile to some older students. The content is still excellent.

  4. Though the content in this program is challenging and wonderful, we do not believe it is worthy of high school credit.

  5. A high-level high school biology program. Requires significant work on the part of the student.

  6. This program requires significant work with ratios, which means the student must solve for unknowns. If you are able to help demonstrate how to solve for the unknown number in a ratio, younger (8th and 9th grade) students should do just fine. We have done this program with two of our children in 8th grade. Sarita says Dr. Wile's introduction to ratios is the clearest she has ever seen, and it was only while working this program with our daughter that she first began to understand them — even after having taken college chemistry. Only one of our children who studied Dr. Wile's program has gone on to high school. But after having studied Apologia Chemistry and then studying Algebra and "re-taking" Chemistry, she has said that she was better prepared for both classes than any of her (honors) classmates. She attributes it all to Dr. Wile's wonderful program.

  7. Algebra 2 required.
