Wichita
homeschooler Joshua E. Whitman recently won a $4,000 ($1,000 per year for four
years) college scholarship in the 12th annual scholarship contest
held by Christian homeschool curriculum supplier Sonlight Curriculum.
Whitman
began Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, this semester with a major
in mechanical engineering.
A National
Merit Semifinalist, Whitman scored a perfect 800 on the Math section of his
SAT. He has used Sonlight Curriculum for many years. Whitman loves to learn and
reportedly fills stacks of paper with original mathematical proofs, theories,
ideas, studies and casual inquiries.
He is the
two-time recipient of the coveted My Own Creation award at the Wichita State
Shocker Mindstorm Challenge. Whitman has also helped lead his BEST Robotics
Competition team to the top prize in the national competition.
A Lego
Mindstorms mentor and a counselor at Wichita State University's Lego
Engineering Summer Camp, Whitman enthusiastically and patiently guides younger
students. After college, Whitman plans to pursue graduate school and help
others through engineering and technology.
The 13
winners of the 12th annual scholarship competition from Sonlight
Curriculum represent diverse geographic regions from Kansas to Central Asia.
They include four National Merit Semifinalists, an Eagle Scout and nationally
award-winning musicians, scientists and communicators.
According to
the scholarship committee, the students demonstrate exceptional character, are
active in their communities, and display leadership, a heart for learning and
creativity.
Over half of
the group earned near perfect scores on the ACT and SAT. All have studied at
least five Sonlight programs and many have used Sonlight since Kindergarten.
“While my
goal is to raise up kids who love to learn by making education interesting, the
result has been students of the highest caliber," said Sarita Holzmann, Sonlight’s
president and co-founder. “We choose from a field of bright and accomplished
students who are already world-changers.”
Sonlight is
the only homeschool curriculum company to offer a college scholarship to any
institution the winner chooses.
The company
has awarded $788,500 to graduates from 12 countries and 32 states
since the beginning of the scholarship program in 2000.
“I count it
a joy to give back to students and their families in a tangible way,” said Holzmann.
“I am eager to see them build on their education to impact others as productive
citizens and servant leaders.”
