Core 530

Take a thrilling expedition through some of the finest literature ever written!

This year your college-bound scholars will travel across the centuries, visit strange imaginary lands, steal a glimpse of paradise and witness the sickening depths of human depravity as they survey many noble works of British literature. Their guides will be skillful penman like: Charles Dickens, C. S. Lewis, Oscar Wilde, John Milton, William Shakespeare and many more.

This advanced year-long study is sure to be one of the most formative and memorable educational experiences of your student's entire homeschool journey, as they travel the path toward higher education and personal enrichment.

INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE

Easily prepare your students for college life!

Since Core 530 is largely self-guided, you will be freed from most teaching tasks this year. You will act mostly as a coach: encouraging, cheering and monitoring the progress of your students.

You will enjoy the fact that, every day, every step of the way, your Core 530 Instructor's Guide provides short biographical sketches about each author, study notes, comprehension questions, and composition guidelines to maximize your student's learning experiences.

Though it does not include history or Bible, Sonlight treats 530 Survey of British Literature as a Core curriculum and it qualifies for the 10% Sonlighters Club discount and all other Core Club benefits.

LITERATURE

Discover 24 masterfully told works of literature containing priceless life lessons!

Core 530 is a complete, one-year "literature-only" program designed to help prepare your pre-college students for "life" as they evaluate a story's message from a biblical worldview.

Your students will also:

  • Discover how to make their communication interesting, engaging, and easy to understand.
  • Become familiar with British literary works from content and stylistic standpoints.
  • Develop a practical understanding of the inner workings of poetry.
  • Vastly expand their vocabulary.
  • Uncover many secrets of great storytellers and understand how to develop stories that captivate their readers.
  • Prepare to take the Advanced Placement test in English Literature.(Note: Advanced Placement, Advanced Placement Program, and AP are registered trademarks of the College Board, which was not involved in the production of, and does not endorse, this product.)

The literature selections they'll read in Survey of British Literature run the gamut of style, voice, and genra and include works of: comedy, tragedy, epic poetry, detective stories, romance novels, historical fiction, satire, adventure, Arthurian (King Arthur) narratives, fantasy, travelogue, autobiography, Gothic horror, and Christian allegory.

Surprises await around every corner...

The literary explorations of your students will reveal many great plots, intriguing characters, and unforgettable tales:

Along the way they will:

  • Discover Old English poem that unveils the first Anglo superhero, written when the Christian gospel first came to the pagans of Scandinavia.
  • Meet Sir Gawain, a knight of the Round Table who struggles with temptation and the superficiality of King Arthur's court.
  • Admire Chaucer's wit and wisdom as he regales us with some of his most popular tales.
  • Deeply ponder the human condition as it is expressed in Shakespeare's incredible tragedy, Hamlet.
  • Relax in the presence of popular stories about Sherlock Holmes, Peter Pan, and a butler, Jeeves.
  • Meditate on several thought-provoking, insightful, and influential Christian works along the path: works like Milton's Paradise Lost and C. S. Lewis' Great Divorce.
  • Experience the horror of life without laws or God in works like Golding's Lord of the Flies, Forster's A Passage to India, and Shelley's Frankenstein.

POETRY/VOCABULARY

Three valuable resources expand vocabulary and unlock the depth and delight of poetry.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Your students will develop powerful communication skills!

Core 530 students are saturated with instruction in the arts of the English language.

This year your students will:

  • Expand their vocabulary through the study of Latin and Greek roots.
  • Be able to read out loud fluently and dramatically.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and logically in a wide range of literary forms.
  • Write insightfully and imaginatively about matters that are of importance.
  • Strive for grace and beauty of expression in their writing, while making their communication interesting and easy to understand.
  • And much more!

ADVANCED PLACEMENT TEST PREPARATION

Your students could earn college credits this year!

Core 530 is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature exam. If your students take and pass the exam, they will receive college credit. Better than that, they will be prepared for a lifetime of scholarly exploits.
