Jonelle, what would our world be like if God our Creator had stuck to one pattern for flowers, trees, animals, people ... and only one shade of green, one shade of red, one shade of blue. God is overwhelmingly generous in his creation, and he has planted that creativity in you. Your desire for beauty is his gift for you - to use to bless him and others. Embrace it with all your heart, honey. Thank you for sharing.

I don't regret a single second of the 10 years I spent home-schooling my kids. For me the best part was being with them day by day and knowing them in a way I couldn't have if they had been at school.

Heidi, that makes sense. I'm glad you're taking the opportunity to homeschool anyway. Where do you find support and encouragement?

I live in a small town (pop. 1100). It is hard for people to understand why we home school here. Our school is great - one of the best in our state. Many of the teachers are Christians and attend church with me. I know a lot of the teachers through local Christian events.

It is just hard for others to understand.

Great example, Jane! I hear from a lot of avid readers that they know many more words than they can pronounce <smile>.

I'll never forget the day in 5th grade, sitting around the reading table. My turn to read came and I read the word "colonel" ... well, you can guess how I said it since I didn't know it. The other kids laugh. I wonder to this day if the teacher had taught that word when I was home sick, if I was daydreaming and missed it, if the kids who laughed were in a different 4th grade class and learned it there ... how did <i>they<i> know it and I didn't?!? I was a good reader!

Also, how is it that I've made it this far in life without having all of the states and their capitals memorized, and often have a problem locating certain ones? Even though I'm currently attempting to teach these to my children (and learning them as I go), I don't consider it a failure if they don't know them a year from now. They are learning how to take a large amount of material, break it down into manageable pieces, find tricks for making it connect in their brains, and are learning to connect it all with the stories we are reading. That is what I call good schooling.

Glad you're all excited for the new catalog <smile>.

Thanks for the idea, Jeanne! We have a few things a bit like that in the IG Links mentioned in your <a href="http://www.sonlight.com/ig.html" rel="nofollow">Instructor's Guides</a> as well as the <a href="http://www.sonlight.com/core-tips.html" rel="nofollow">Core Tips</a> CDs. And, yes, such lists are quite a bit of work to maintain. I'll keep this suggestion in mind as we continue to consider the digital revolution sweeping through literature and education. I appreciate your thoughts!

Great job, Jane! Clearly being interested in this kind of stuff makes a huge difference <smile>. And you make a great point: Stories help us recall information far better than points of data. And congratulations on your citizenship!
