Homeschool Students Win $82,000 in College Scholarships

Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd. awarded $82,000 in scholarship money to twelve outstanding homeschoolers.

Littleton, CO—Aug. 12, 2008—Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd. awarded $82,000 in scholarship money to twelve outstanding homeschoolers who start college this month. The competition for college dollars from Sonlight—a Christian, literature-based homeschool curriculum company—grows each year with 79 winners since 2000, and over $366,000.00 in scholarship funds.

"It’s my vision that all students who use Sonlight Curriculum would love to learn and would be equipped to do whatever God calls them to do. I am grateful to play a part in helping them achieve that end through higher education," said Sarita Holzmann, Sonlight’s president and founder.

This year’s winners include future engineers, authors, doctors, linguists, missionaries and musicians. High scorers on national college placement tests (one student with a perfect SAT score and several students with near-perfect scores), numerous National Merit candidates, and a handful of Eagle scouts, award-winning scientists, and national debate champions were in the running.

"We hope our scholarship recipients will become caring fathers, mothers, and sound citizens, able and willing to take on the future reins of leadership in the home and in institutions, and to inspire and care for their peers in all areas of family, government, and commerce," General Manager Wayne Griess said.

Sonlight will require all scholarship candidates for the 2009 competition to demonstrate that they’ve studied at least five Sonlight Curriculum programs (approximately five years of study).

The company has supported homeschooled students in higher education for eight years. Sonlight leadership said they plan to continue to increase their scholarship dollars over the next few years.

“Our scholarship applicants are exceptionally qualified academically, but equally qualified in mission mindedness, international awareness and spiritual leadership.

“They tend to have a deep yearning to make a godly difference in the world, whether that is to pursue a profession or to extend light and truth as they live and work among cultures all around the world,” said Griess. "We count it a privilege to encourage them to strive for excellence, and acknowledge their excellence as they take the next step to college."
