Horizons Math is designed to help your children understand math from the ground up.
Using a spiral learning technique, children are first introduced to a concept and then asked to solve related and increasingly difficult problems over the course of several days or weeks. The concept then re-emerges in later exercises for a new concept. This frees up the children's minds and does not overwhelm them with too much information. They feel confident because they get to take steady, measured steps, and as they revisit concepts over time, they continually strengthen and reinforce their existing knowledge base.
Each year's program consists of three pieces:
- Two colorful, well-organized workbooks each with 80 lessons and 8 unit exams
- Teacher's Handbook with daily lesson plans, answer keys, and final exams
- 80 reproducible worksheets
Teacher Friendly

My daughter is enjoying the Horizons program this year. We purchased Saxon 4/5 as well, and actually started the year out with it because she did better on that placement test (it also seemed most similar to her last year in Bob Jones math 3). We did not like saxon as we thought we would. It was boring and tedious. We did it a few weeks, then switched to horizons, and have been pleased. However, there are a few things that can be improved. For instance, it seemed to take a very long time to get back into division problems (Bob Jones 3 finished strongly in division). It took months to even see the first problem in this book. Also, there are occasional cryptic equations, and the teacher's reference is not a great help as a teacher's aid (not a big deal, but the answer key portion is in list format- not as easy to read as Horizons math 3 which they give a mini copy of the whole page). So, if you don't mind being a little creative with teaching some concepts here and there, this program is great. My daughter loves the colorful pages, frequent, fun bible references/puzzles. She is learning a lot, and we are overall, very satisfied. Will buy level 5 next year.

I am so impressed with Horizons Math 4. My son was having a terrible time learning math and I felt that I wasn't much help to him. Horizons Math made it easy by building on concepts slowly and by repeating concepts over days and weeks with lots of review but not too much work. We've seen tremendous improvement in his math this year. Thanks Horizons!
