Shadow of a Bull is a book set in Medievil Spain in a town called Arcangel. Manolo Olivar, as the main character, dreads the day he will have to follow in his father’s footsteps and be a bullfighter. Juan Olivar, his father, died fighting a bull in the arena. The people of Arcangel believe he was the best bullfighter in all of Spain for his great bravery. Manolo is convinced he is a coward, but feels that he will disappoint those who are waiting with much expectation for the day Arcangel will have another legendary bullfighter. Manolo doesn’t feel he can ever live up to their expectations.
In the months preceding the bullfight he tries to learn as much as there is to know about bullfighting. Friends of his father who are dedicated to Manolo’s success give him much of their time and knowledge to help him. As he approaches the day of the fight Manolo is seeking for facts about his father that would confirm that even the great bullfighter, Juan Olivar, was afraid at his first fight.
Manolo’s feelings are easy to connect with. “I don’t want to die yet!” “ Why do I have to be just like my father?” “ Is it normal that I am afraid of the fight?”
Shadow of a Bull is a book I would recommend to anyone. It is a very well written “coming of age” book that gives a lot of information about the time period.

Full of adventure and lots of danger -- my 11 year old son liked this one.
