(Review by Laura Lynn Chesser, 12) In the book, Cheaper by the Dozen, written by Frank Gilbreth, Jr., and Ernestine Gilbreth Carrey, the stubborn, loving, spontaneous, and curious main character, Frank Gilbreth, Sr., is the father of 12 red-headed and freckled children. It is the Gilbreth family's journey through life, and somewhat of a survival guide on how to deal with a family of that size. It is set in the 1920s, and it shows how the styles, the music, and even the dancing started to change drastically. Girls started wearing short skirts and cutting their hair into shorter styles. Jazz music was introduced to the United States, and everyone loved it. (well except for Frank Gilbreth, Sr.,) This entertaining adventure is perfect for reading aloud with families. It is comical, and makes you want to keep reading. You can see them going through normal family struggles, but times 12!
