Marly's dad returned from war very tired and needs to go somewhere to rest. Where? Grandma's old farm, now not lived in. Marly is enchanted by their neighbor's sugar bush, and every thing about the place. She says they are miracles- in fact, Spring is a miracle! Their neighbor, Mr. Chris, promises Marly a new miracle every weekend they come to Maple Hill. Once she, her brother, and her Mother come to stay with Daddy for the whole summer at Maple Hill, Marly has many adventures. She meets a hermit, finds out many things about plants, meets some mischievous cows, and even sees some foxes. When they decide to stay for the fall and go to school there, Marly is elated. Then, the next spring, during sugaring season,Mr. Chris, who has a weak heart, has a heart attack. It's up to Marly and her family to make the syrup. How this book ends is the real miracle. :)

This was a very enjoyable book that left us with a real appreciation for a new look at the natural world. A cozy book.
