While I don't think this is a bad story, I don't think it should be part of a kindergarten curriculum. It's just too mature. I think this would be a better choice for middle school age. It doesn't happen often, but we chose not to read this one. Of course, that is the great thing about homeschool - we can choose not to do something if it doesn't work for us.

Very different from the movie! We loved the imaginative story and crazy creatures Dorothy meets. A classic- and so many sequals to read once it's over!

I've seen the movie SO MANY times (it's one of mine and my kids favorite movies EVER) and was really curious as to how different the original story would be. I was wondering if I'd like it and especially if my kids would like it.
Well, we all LOVED it!! All of us actually enjoyed the little differences from the movies (the original slippers were silver, cool) and were able to talk about the changes made and which we preferred.
I said before at the beginning of this review that the movie is one of our favorites, I can safely say the book is loved even more by my kids! I would highly recommend this book. My daughters were 4 and 6 when we read it. I think my 4 year old grasped it enough to follow along but it was much better for my 6 year old. I'm looking forward to rereading this one again and again over the next few years of homeschooling my younger kids :-)

My favorite Sonlight book was The Wonderful Wizard of OZ. This is my favorite book because ithas lots of fun adventures. My favorite part of the book was when they started looking for Oz the Great and Terrible. This book made me so excited because I wanted to know if the Scarecrow, Tin-woodman, and the Lion got got their brains, hearts, and courage. I think you'll want to read this book it is very exciting. We started this book but didn't finish it. I don't feel that it is a threat to Christianity however, I didn't feel comfortable reading it aloud to my young children. If they want to read it later that is up to them. I just felt there were better things I could be reading to them.

Threw this one away right out of the box. The Bible says to stay away from witchcraft, but we are expected to explain "good" witches. Some people say they used "good fairy" in place of "good witch," but that's kind of like calling the devil a demon. Same thing, less sinister.

Hands down, this was one of the best books I have ever read. It is better than the movie, if you can imagine that being possible. It is not nearly as scary or threatening as the movie might seem to children. The Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion are adorable characters that made us smile a lot throughout the book. I also felt that this book was no threat to Christianity, as it is entirely fictional and obviously not a true story. I truly enjoyed this book. My only regret is that I did not get the chance to read it as a child.

I'd give it 3.5 stars. If I'd read the book without ever having seen the movie, I might have rated it higher. The movie is now such an icon of culture, that reading the book after having seen the movie myraid times, well the book was a bit disappointing. It was interesting to see the differences between the book and the movie--the book presented a good opportunity to show children how books are not always like their corresponding movie. The book is a fantastical book which I did not feel was threatening to Christianity

I had never read this book, and DID NOT like the movie. I was hesitant to even read this book to my 5 1/2 year old, and told her that if I did not like its content that we would stop reading it. I was completely surprised by this book. It is enjoyable and very different from the movie. Any crisis or scary issues are mild and delt with quickly. It was a good time to talk about witches, and that was not the main portion of the book anyway. We enjoyed it as a simple children's book. I wanted to put others at ease who may have been as concerned as I was.
