Young learners will leave the comforts of Western civilization to explore the rich history of the Eastern Hemisphere this year. And your son or daughter will be amazed by the courageous stories and spectacular achievements we rarely hear about in the West.
More focused on cultures than history, Eastern Hemisphere will astonish and delight your child with the introductions it provides to peoples and cultures few Americans ever think about. Your son or daughter will take an ambling trek from the South Pacific, through Australia, up to Japan, through southeast Asia, India, China, the Middle East and, eventually, to Africa.
Your child will...
- Meet Mohandas Gandhi and learn how his philosophy of passive resistance gained new rights for "Untouchables" and led, eventually, to the end of British rule in India.
- Run alongside Olympic champion Eric Liddell from his little-known boyhood in China to his gold-medal triumph in 1964.
- Join Commodore Matthew C. Perry's journey to Japan and learn how his diplomacy opened doors in a previously closed nation.
- Marvel at the life and deeds of Teresa of Calcutta, an unlikely hero who went against the grain of our me-first culture to help the poorest of the poor in the Calcutta slums.
- Discover how young 27-year-old Mary Slessor traveled to the Calabar region of Africa where she changed the lives of several tribes forever.
- Find out why Genghis Khan and his Mongol Horde left the Gobi Desert and conquered the lands from the coast of China to eastern Europe.
- Accompany Father Matteo Ricci to China and observe the unorthodox methods he used to break through formerly impenetrable cultural walls.
And this is just a glimpse of what you'll cover in Core 5. There are many more fascinating stories you and your children will share this year.
Interwoven with very personal experiences like these, students will learn more matter-of-fact information about the peoples and places they're visiting through World Book Deluxe Encyclopedia articles. The 2007 edition of the award-winning World Book for Mac OS X has been updated to take advantage of Apple's new Tiger operating system, with two Tiger Widgets and Spotlight searching.
Please note that the Bible program is not included in the Core package anymore. However, Bible readings are still scheduled in the Instructor's Guides. See the Bible 5 program.

Your child will enjoy the Read-Aloud and Readers and be moved to think and reflect in new ways about those living in other cultures. The Readers also include a number of biographies.

Rounding out the Eastern Hemisphere curriculum is a Sonlight-exclusive, two-hour DVD that permits your child to experience in sight, sound and color, the immediate reality of over 54 peoples and cities around the world.
The people among whom Core 5 students will spend most of their time comprise 90 percent of the world's unevangelized peoples. Most of these groups have no Christians living among them — "not even a missionary. Something must change if God's promise is ever to come true that Jesus will redeem some "from every tribe and language and people and nation" (Revelation 5:9). We want your children to be aware of this "other half" of the world, pray for these peoples, and perhaps, go to live among them!
