Om-kas-toe is a member of the Blackfeet Indian tribe in the early 1700s — before
horses. He has the privilege of helping to bring the first elk dog (horse) into his tribe. An exciting, authentic look at life among the American Indians prior to the coming of white men.

By Gerrit age 10, book review: This is my favorite book so far in the Core 3 readers because the author keeps you interested all the time. My favorite part was when Om-kas-toe rides off on the black horse. This book made me feel excited. I think you'll want to read this book because, you really learn about American Indian life in the past.

Book Report Have you ever wondered what it would be like living in “dog days”? The book Om¬-kas-to by Kenneth Thomasma will answer your questions. Twin Boy finds a bird with a hurt wing and names it Wise Bird. The rest of the people in tribe decided to name Twin Boy Om-kas-to (meaning wise bird). Om asked Wise Bird to help him find food. The bird brought Om to a half eaten rabbit. Later, in the same place, Om saw an elk stuck in a tree. He speared it, skinned it, ate some of it and gave the rest to his people. A woman lost her baby. Om asked Wise Bird to help find the baby. Did Wise Bird find the baby? The most exciting part of the story is when Om and his sister, Twin Girl, capture an elkdog (horse). Another event is when Om makes a surprise attack to capture an elkdog. He ended up spending the night with a horse, Big Black, for three days. Wise Bird sent Twin Girl to find him. If you enjoy reading about adventures read this book. Cannon

This book is about the Blackfeet tribe. The main character is Om-kas-toe. He and his twin sister capture an elkdog, what the Blackfeet call horses, all by themselves. My favorite part of the book was when Wise Bird found a lost baby. The book made me feel like I was a Blackfeet Indian myself. It was interesting to see what it would be like to live with the Blackfeet. I think you should read this book so that you can hear the story that was told around many Indian campfires. Hannah S. This was my favorite book because it has so many exiting things. Like when Om-kas-toe was riding on his beautiful dream horse. My most favorite part was when Om-kas toe was surrounded by Snake Warriors. That was the most exiting part in the whole book! I think you should read this book because it is very interesting and is full of excitement. Casey C. age 9.

I liked the book "Om-kas-toe" because it was exciting. It was full of adventure. My favorite part was when Om was surrounded by the enemy and Wise Bird saves him. The book made me feel excited and happy. I had a great time reading it with my mom. I think kids should read this book because it teaches them about the life of Blackfeet Indians and how capturing the elkdog, which means horse, changed their lifestyle forever. Taryn P.

Om-Kas Toe is a book about a twin boy who captures an elk dog, or horse. My favorite part of this exciting story is when Om was surrounded by enemies and he called his raven, Wise Bird. The bird did many things that frightened the enemies so they let him go. This true story makes me feel tense and amazed I really think you should read this book because Om and his twin sister, called Twin Girl, did many great things. Brikenya J., age 8

This book is my favorite book because it is so exciting. It was exciting when Om-kas-toe and his sister, Twin Girl, caught an elkdog. It was also exciting when he and his tribe killed a buffalo and Om-kas-toe got knocked out. My favorite part was when he almost got captured by the enemy. Then Wise Bird, his pet raven, came and helped Om-kas-toe. Wise Bird helped by flying in a circle then Om-kas-toe threw a stick in the air and Wise Bird did a rollover and caught the stick in his beak. This book made me feel like a brave boy. I felt like that because Om-kas-toe was a brave boy. If you read this book you might become a brave boy or girl. I think you'll want to read this book for all the excitement. This book can teach you how to stand strong even if stuff is not looking good. I hope you will read this great book to experience the excitement. William T. age 10

In the story of Om - kas - toe, a teenage Indian boy yearns for adventure. When the chance finally comes while scouting, Om spots a strange creature. He and White-Wolf name it Elkdog. In this story, Om will have many adventures, including capturing an elkdog! Winner of a Newberry medal and a LaLonde family badge of approval, I’m sure you will love this book. Its excitement and tension make Om-kas-toe the ultimate story book. Isaac L. age 9

This book is about a Blackfoot Indian tribe that captures many Elkdogs, now called horses, and in particular two twins who start the Blackfoot raids of elkdogs. Om-kas-toe was my favorite book because it had a lot of adventure and excitement and compassion. I especially liked where Om mounted a big beautiful black mare and rode faster than a racehorse with Snake Warriors chasing him. The book made me feel happy, adventurous, and a tiny bit scared at times. I think you’ll want to read this book, because it has a lot of adventure. The author writes the book so it feels like you are right there in the middle of it. TJ Petersen age 9
